The Radiation Safety Office ensures safe use and handling
of radioactive material and radiation-producing machines
throughout The George Washington University, according
to federal and local reulations and according to the
University's Nuclear Regulatory Commission "broad-scope
license" commitments. This includes the use of radioactive
material and radiation-producing machines in various
specialties and in numerous research projects.
The Radiation Safety Office monitors all personnel
and activites using radiation sources; communicates
the policies and regulations regarding the safe use
of radioactive material and other radiation sources
to the University community; recommends actions to the
GWU Radiation Safety Committee and management; and interacts
with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA), the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), the Department of Transportation (DOT),
the District of Columbia Radiological Control Porogram,
and the Radiation Safety offices of other universities,
research institutions, and radiation source vendors.
For any research research or other use of radioisotopes,
the form entitled "Authorization to Use Radioactive
Materials or Ionizing Radiation" must be completed and
submitted to the Radiation Safety Office, and approved
by the Radiation Safety Committee, prior to initiation
of the research study or other use.
All radioactive materials must be ordered through the
Radiation Safety Office to ensure that the requested
materials and quantities are authorized by our NRC license
and by the user's Radiation Safety Committee authorization,
and that overall possession limits in the license are
not exceeded.
