Radiation Safety

Radiation is used on campus for research and many use isotopes in liquid form.  Radioactive material (RAM) is regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) who licenses institutions to use RAM.  According to our agreement with the NRC any person wishing to use RAM at GWU must be authorized by the appropriate internal procedures before any use can occur.  Following are the elements of our program which are based on our agreement with the NRC and keeps GWU in compliance.  Click on each link to find out more

    • Radiation user’s manual – All users of RAM must be familiar with and comply with this manual.  Other required reading is in the radiation binder (see AU toolbox link below) for each Authorized User.

    • Training - Initial training is scheduled by the RSO and refresher training is given annually.
    • Authorized User toolbox – Downloadable forms and log sheets, binder documents, self-inspection checklist, forms to become a new authorized user or a new user under an AU.
