The Office of Laboratory Safety and Compliance
(OLSC) is responsible for occupational and environmental
health and safety for the George Washington University
Medical Center (GWUMC). The primary focus is the safe
management of biological and chemical hazards associated
with research and teaching laboratories throughout the
George Washington University. In compliance with applicable
institutional policies and federal regulations, OLSC
works with the faculty, staff, and students to provide
a safe and effective research and teaching environment.
Services provided by OLSC:
- Risk assessment of research protocols
- Management of hazardous biological and chemical
agents and hazardous waste.
- Biosafety management of the 704 BSL-3 Infectious
Disease Facility and the 744 BSL-3 Animal Research
Facility.
- Safety and compliance audits of research laboratories.
- Management of Workers' Compensation Program.
- Fire and Life Safety compliance.
- Industrial Hygiene services for the assessment and
remediation of hazards in the laboratories and work
places in the Medical Center.
- Compliance Training: Laboratory Safety, Fire Safety,
Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication, and Bloodborne
Pathogens.
