Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) |
![]() |
| In 1993 the National Institutes of Health awarded funds to six sites to establish the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS). The broad purpose is to investigate the impact of HIV on U.S. women. These studies are gathering information vital to the design of other research projects and clinical trials to evaluate better treatment strategies for women. WIHS started enrollment in 1994 and has followed over 2500 women with visits every six months, providing crucial information on how HIV infection affects women's health and women's lives. Fifty-six percent of the participants are African American, 24 percent are Hispanic and 2 percent represent other minorities.
The DC WIHS Consortium is centered at Georgetown University Hospital and includes sites at Howard University, Inova Juniper, Montgomery County, Whitman Walker Clinic, and George Washington University Medical Center. Sylvia Silver, D.A., is the Principal Investigator here at GWUMC. For more information about the DC WIHS, please call 202-784-2687. Please click here for information about the National WIHS .
