Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)

OSHA 1910.1030 or the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (BBP) has special requirements for anyone who, because of their job requirements, may come in contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.  Examples of those covered are: housekeeping, EMTs or clinical workers.  Lab personnel working with biologicals must take a more extensive biosafety training, in addition to this training, as well as read and understand the biosafety manual.  To comply with this standard OLS has the following program elements:

    • Exposure Control Plan – All those covered must be familiar with this plan
    • Training – All covered employees must take BBP training.  The training page has a list of all trainings provided by OLS.
    • Hepatitis B vaccination kit – All those covered have the right to receive the HepB vaccine free of charge.  This offer is only for employees whose job requires them to have potential contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.  If students would like the vaccine they will have to check with their insurance for coverage or pay out of pocket.  We highly recommend getting the vaccine even if it is not covered free of charge.  This information packet is available from OLS.
