GW Researchers Reveal Digital Transcriptome of Breast Cancer; New Research could lead to innovative clues about the biology, diagnosis, and targeted therapies for Breast Cancer
GW Cancer Research Team in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, published a study that is the first of its kind to use mRNA sequencing to look at the expression of genome, at a unprecedented resolution at the current time, in three types of breast cancer. The study titled, “Transcriptomic landscape of breast cancer through mRNA sequencing,” is published in the Feb. 14 edition of the journal, Scientific Reports, a new open access Nature journal for large volume data.

GW Medical Student and Professors Examine the Financial and Psychological Costs of Self-Castration in a Transsexual Woman
Michael S. Irwig, M.D., assistant professor of Medicine, Anton Trinidad, M.D., PhD., associate professor of Psychiatry, and Matthew St. Peter, a fourth year medical student at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, co-authored an article in the Journal of Sexual Medicine entitled, “Self-Castration by a Transsexual Woman: Financial and Psychological Costs: A Case Report.” Dr. Irwig and his co-authors discuss the case of a transsexual woman who presented to the emergency room after undertaking self-castration. DC Chef Walks in Support of Women’s Heart Health
The GW Women’s Heart Center has a new supporter in local chef and restaurateur, Ris Lacoste, who owns the Foggy Bottom restaurant, RIS. In a program called RIS Walk 60, Lacoste has taken to the streets to raise money for the GW Women’s Heart Center by walking along a designated route, beginning at her restaurant at 23rd and L Sts, NW, for an hour each day and asking supporters to pledge a dollar for every mile she walks. Lacoste says she welcomes company from anyone who wishes to join her on her walks.

Institute of Biomedical Sciences Student Awarded Two-Year Fellowship from PhRMA
Lindsay Garvin, a doctoral candidate pursuing a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology as part of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, a joint program with the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the GW Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a two-year research fellowship by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association of America (PhRMA) Foundation.

GWish Receives Grant to Study Impact of Spirituality on the Health Care Experience

GW Doctors Perform Life Saving Surgery on Honduran Woman (video)
Cynthia Tracy, M.D., professor of Medicine at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences and cardiologist at GW Hospital, discusses the surgery she and her colleagues performed to repair a hole in a 36-year old Honduran woman's heart at GW Hospital. The surgery had to performed in the United States, as the proper equipment was not available in Honduras, so the woman and her husband flew to DC with the help from the American and Honduran embassies.
