Research Interests
Two research programs have directed the attention and efforts of my laboratory over the past 20 years: ( i ) immunity to parasitic protozoa focused on Trypanosoma musculi infections in various strains of normal and mutant mice; and ( ii ) aging of the immune system and functional immune competence. In recent years, the two lines of interest have conjoined and T. musculi has been employed as a prototypic pathogen to identify the elements of immune responses that are inordinately susceptible to senescence. The innate component of the immune system and the effect of aging on the innate responses to T. musculi are the central subjects of current research.
In addition to laboratory research, global problems of public health occupy a considerable portion of my time and energy. Our group is involved in programs concerned with intestinal helminth infections among children in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, anemia tuberculosis/malaria in Indonesia and Cambodia, and the impact of HIV/AIDS, poor sanitation and nutrition among children in Mozambique.
