BSN Program

WASHINGTON— The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Department of Nursing Education will launch a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree beginning in Fall 2009. The new degree program was developed by the GW Department of Nursing Education to meet the increasing demand for nurses in the region and across the country.

“There is a demand in our region that needs to be met. By offering this program at a time of such critical need, we hope to help our region and educate students so that they can fill an important gap in patient care,” said Jean Johnson, RN-C, PhD, senior associate dean, Health Sciences and professor of Health Care Sciences. The development of this new program is in line with the mission of the Department of Nursing Education, which also offers masters, doctoral, and post-masters certificate programs, to develop nursing leaders who will actively engage in promoting health and well-being at a local, national, and global level.

The 15-month program is designed as a second-degree program, and welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds and undergraduate degrees. Classes will be held at the GW Virginia Campus, which houses a brand-new, state-of-the-art Nursing Simulation Learning Center. The program’s goals and curriculum are based on guidelines set by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to prepare graduates to be generalist nurses, providing direct and indirect patient care, coordinating and managing care, and serving in the profession with responsibility and accountability.

“This is an exciting time for the GW Department of Nursing Education. Our goal is to provide students with a high level of nursing expertise, so they can provide quality, compassionate, patient-centered care,” said Ellen Dawson, PhD, ANP, chair of the Department of Nursing Education. “Through this new program, we will be able to do all of this and help our community at the same time.”

The GW Department of Nursing Education is now accepting applications for its first class of Bachelor of Science in Nursing students. For more information, to attend an Information Session, or to apply online, visit: www.gwumc.edu/healthsci/departments/nursing/index.cfm or call (703) 726-4493.
