DEPARTMENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The Department of Exercise Science
The Department of Exercise Science in the School of Public Health and Health Services meets the increasing demand for
well-educated professionals capable of delivering exercise-based preventive, technical education and rehabilitative services.
  • The Department has consistently paved new roads in the emerging field of Exercise Science education, and is currently revamping the undergraduate curriculum in Exercise Science and reviewing a new M.P.H. program in Physical Activity that will be the second of its kind in the U.S.
  • Department Chair Loretta DiPietro, Ph.D., M.P.H, continues research on post-meal exercise and glycemic control in aging through NIH/NIA funding.
  • Wayne Miller, Ph.D., M.S. continues to measure activity in school children using accelerometry through National Safe Routes to School Program funding.
  • Does video exer-gaming provide the same benefits as traditional physical education? Todd Miller, Ph.D. is comparing the two in terms of energy expenditure in school children through Robert Wood Johnson funding.
  • The department recently welcomed three junior faculty members: Amanda Visek, Ph.D., AASP-CC, N.C.C.; Mary Barron, Ph.D. and Jean Gutierrez, Ph.D.; and two returning senior faculty: Larry Hamm, Ph.D., and Jerry Danoff, Ph.D., P.T.
