Listservs at GWUMC

General Listserv Information

Listservs are software programs which manage discussion groups by disseminating messages to many people at one time. There are student listservs available which provide information on school activities and policies. Click on the appropriate group listed above for instructions on joining.

Discussion groups communicate messages to all people who have joined the group. When you reply to a listserv message, check carefully to whom you are sending the message. Most often, you will want to reply to the individual who sent the message, rather than the entire listserv.

There are discussion groups that cater to diverse interests. In public health and medicine, hundreds of groups exist that focus on research issues, health promotion, patient and consumer education, and basic science. The instructions for joining other listservs will be similar to those given below for the GWUMC listservs.

To send a message to a list, address it to the list name. Example: to send a message to the MED2008 list:

To: med2008@hermes.gwu.edu

One message can be sent to several lists; just separate the addresses with commas:

To: med2009@hermes.gwu.edu, med2010@hermes.gwu.edu

General Subscribe Commands

To subscribe to GW listservs:

  1. Send an email message to the listserv software at:

    listserv@hermes.gwu.edu

  2. Leave the Subject line blank.
  3. In the body of the message, type:
