Shipping Library Materials to Distance Ed Students

Borrowing from Himmelfarb

In order to facilitate access to its print collection for all eligible students, Himmelfarb Library will ship books from its borrowing collection to students enrolled in distance education programs at the GW Medical Center.

Before making a request, please read our policies and protocol, listed below.

Who is eligible?

This service is restricted to those students who are currently enrolled in distance education programs offered by the GW Medical Center. This service is not available to on-campus students who are out of town for a rotation, externship, etc.

We do not ship overseas.

What materials are eligible?

Books from our collection may be shipped. No AV materials such as DVDs, CDs or videos are eligible, nor are items in the Reference and Reserve collections. Print journals may not be shipped, although copies of individual articles may be sent upon request. Visit Himmelfarb's Photocopy Service webpage for information on obtaining article copies.

How are requests made?

Use Himmelfarb Library's convenient online shipping form.

How many items maximum can be requested?

The limit is 5 items per user in a 7-day period. (If a multi-volume set is requested, each volume counts as one item.)

Extended due date

To accommodate the time lost in shipping, due dates for items will be 4 weeks rather than the usual 3. Items being returned must be postmarked by the due date in order not to accrue overdue fines.

Cost of shipping

Himmelfarb Library assumes the cost of shipping items to users. The borrower assumes the cost of shipping items back to Himmelfarb.

Method of shipping

UPS ships our materials.

Delivery time

Deliveries should arrive within 7 days of the request.

Liability

The borrower assumes liability for items being returned. If items are returned via the Post Office, we advise that you insure the package. With proof of insurance, you are not responsible for items the Post Office loses during shipping.

Overdue fines

Overdue fines are the same as for books borrowed on-site ($0.25/day).

Lost/Stolen/Damaged items

If a Himmelfarb Library item becomes lost or stolen while in your possession, you will be responsible for paying replacement fees and any overdue fines accrued before the item was reported lost. In some cases, a portion of the fines will be forgiven if there is documentation of theft.

If you receive an overdue notice for an item which you returned to the Library, contact the Circulation Desk at (202) 994-2962.

If a book is damaged while in your possession, you will be responsible for paying repair or replacement costs for each item, plus a $25.00 processing fee per item.

Contact the Circulation Desk Manager at (202) 994-1829 if you have questions or require further information.

Payment for overdue/lost/stolen/damaged items

Checks should be mailed directly to the Circulation Manager:

Renewals/Holds

Distance Education students may renew items online or over the phone, as long as their account is in good standing. Should someone else place a hold on any items you have checked out, you may not renew those items, but must instead return them by the original due date.

Distance Education students who would like to place a hold on an item currently checked out should contact the Circulation Desk Manager, Kathy Lyons, rather than place the hold online. Call (202) 994-1829 to speak to her, or send her an e-mail at mlbkml@gwumc.edu .

To renew online, go to My Account in the Library Catalog. To renew by phone, call (202) 994-2962 during Himmelfarb's hours of operation.
