Welcome to a new academic year! Himmelfarb Library strives to support the clinical, educational and research needs of the Medical Center community. To that end, we provide:

One-on-one orientations with faculty and students to review and identify resources that enhance the curriculum.
Extensive collections of electronic journals, textbooks, and databases on health care topics including:

Evidence-based medicine
Global health
Clinical images
Environmental health
Health policy

Consultations on:

Reserves and electronic reserves
Intellectual property as it relates to classroom and online instruction
Blackboard
Accessing resources from off-campus

Orientations and instruction for specific classes and class sessions with resources and examples geared to the topic at hand.
Research Guides tailored to specific programs and/or courses.

To schedule an orientation, locate a book on teaching in the clinical setting, or access a specialized database or e-journal, simply:

Use the Library webpage as your base of operations for information resources. It includes links to the Library Catalog, databases, e-journals and e-texts as well as a staff listing, class schedule, and Library policies.

Extended Library Hours During Exams!

Himmelfarb Library will remain open until 2am daily from Friday, May 1st through Thursday, May 21st.

The Circulation Desk will close at 12 midnight as usual.

Food for Fines!

Himmelfarb Library will be having a "Food for Fines" collection drive from April 19 - May 3, 2009.

Here are the details:

One dollar in current library fines will be removed from your record for every canned good or non-perishable food item that is donated.
All items will be donated to Bread for the City, a local non-profit organization serving low-income residents of D.C.
A maximum of $20.00 in fines will be waived per person.
Only fines can be removed, not book replacement fees.
You may donate food items even if you don't have fines.
We will not accept monetary donations. Please contact Bread for the City directly.

We're encouraging healthy eating at Bread for the City and you can help! We ask that food donations for our food program be as healthy as possible (i.e. no trans fat).

E-Resources: Appropriate & Inappropriate Use

Recently, one of our journal publishers, the American Chemical Society, reported excessive downloading from several computers accessing journal articles via the George Washington University. In response, the American Chemical Society shut off access to their journals from segments of the GWU system.

Excessive downloading of content violates Himmelfarb Library's Appropriate Use Policy. In general, appropriate use permits users to conduct personal research to support education, research, and clinical practice, and to print or download individual copies of materials. GWUs licensed databases, journals, and textbooks do not permit users to copy or distribute the contents for any other purpose, to download large portions of the resources, or to re-post the resources on the Internet.

In this situation, the actions of a few can have consequences for the entire GWU campus. We are working to restore access to ACS titles, and wanted to remind users to respect the Appropriate Use Policy.

Color printing now available!

Some things just look better in color. You can now print your PowerPoint slides, charts and graphs, and Flickr photos in color from any of the library's computers.

Select the color printer ("Himmelfarb Color Printer") from the printer options and then send your print job. The color printer is located in the student lounge on the third floor of Himmelfarb Library (in the Bloedorn Technology Center). The cost is 75 cents per page and is deducted from the balance on your GWorld card.

Women in Biomedical Research

In 2007, a National Academies' report, Beyond Bias and Barriers, Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering, was published. The NIH followed up on this report with a mentoring workshop in 2007 and a conference held March 4, 2008. The conference explored "best practices that will stimulate future generations of women in biomedical research to see opportunities, rather than barriers, as they envision careers that extend from training to full partnership as leaders in their organizations," according to Barbara Alving, M.D., M.A.C.P.

Take a look at the published meeting proceedings on Women in Biomedical Research: Best Practices for Sustaining Career Success. This report explores the various panel's recommendations on the issues:

Last call for Art Show submissions

Preparations are underway for the 2009 Himmelfarb Library Art Show. Many works have already been submitted for display, but space is still available.

If you would like to have your work shown during the Art Show in April, please submit your pieces no later than Friday, March 27th. The Art Show will kick-off with an opening reception on April 6th and run throughout the month of April.
