Request & Recommend Resources to Himmelfarb

Himmelfarb Library welcomes recommendations from faculty, students and staff members for materials of all types that we may want to add to our collection. Because of your research, clinical, and educational expertise, you may be aware of an information resource that would be valuable to our collection, and we want to hear from you!

Although the final addition is dependent upon a number of factors, we depend upon your input to identify high-quality materials. Once a request is made, we will review the specific title, balance it with the other titles in the same area, and keep you aware of the final disposition. We will also provide any training necessary.

Please do not hesitate to contact us to make us aware of your request. You can submit requests and recommendations:

Purchase Request Form

By contacting the individual responsible for that area of the collection:

Books: George Paul (202-994-3682, mlbgpp@gwumc.edu)

Journals: Steve Brown (202-994-9756, mlbswb@gwumc.edu)

Audiovisuals: Catherine Harris (202-994-9453, mlbcrh@gwumc.edu)

Software: Alexandra Gomes (202-994-1825, mlbawg@gwumc.edu)

Databases and Electronic Textbooks: Laura Abate (202-994-8570, mlblea@gwumc.edu)

By making your request known to your Library Liaison.

Please help us with your special knowledge as we try to make our collection one of the best available.

Fall Course Reserve Materials

As summer gets underway, it is a good time to submit materials for fall 2008 courses! The deadline for submitting reserves materials early is:

Monday, August 4, 2008

Submit your requests and materials by the deadline to ensure that all materials for your course(s) will be available to students at the start of classes. Materials are processed on a first come - first served basis. Our easy to use submission forms are available 24 hours a day.

Request Reserves Materials for Blackboard - use this form for Blackboard e-reserve materials.

Request Print or Audiovisual Reserves - use this form for print and audiovisual materials.

Remember to provide us with good quality photocopies (single sided) of journal articles or book chapters that you want to use for print or electronic reserves.

More information about placing materials on course reserve and links to the forms can be found at the Reserves Services home page. If you have questions, please contact Leah Pellegrino (Head of Cataloging & Reserves - mlblcp@gwumc.edu, 202-994-3685).

Remote access to Himmelfarb's electronic library

Off-campus access to Himmelfarb Library's collection of electronic journals, textbooks, and databases is available to all GW faculty, staff, and students.

Himmelfarb Library's electronic collections include 2,400 + full-text journals, 200+ textbooks including complete text and images, and 70+ databases including research articles databases, clinical/evidence-based medicine databases, drug and pharmacology databases, and more.

Himmelfarb offers two ways for GW faculty, staff, and students to access library resources from off-campus computing locations. The recommended method for obtaining off-campus access is the VPN (GWireless).

VPN (GWireless) is web-based software which will allow your computer to function as though it is on the GWU campus. This option provides both wireless and off-campus access, and is available to GW faculty, staff, and students who login with their GW NetID (@gwu.eduemail login) and password. GW faculty, staff, and students can obtain additional information on VPN (GWireless) and setting up their GW NetID using the online instructions.

ALADIN is an alternate method for accessing library resources from off-campus locations. ALADIN is accessible to GW faculty, staff, and students who can login with their GWid (the letter 'G' followed by an 8-digit number) and last name. GW faculty, staff, and students can obtain additional information on ALADIN and determining their GWid using the online instructions.

If you have questions regarding off-campus access, please contact Laura Abate at 202-994-8570 or mlblea@gwumc.edu.

Himmelfarb Library was recently notified that one of its licensed resources, MDConsult, was accessed at a rate that exceeded normal and authorized use of copyright protected material.

Himmelfarb Library users are expected to abide by US copyright law, the University's Code of Conduct for Users of Computing Systems and Services, and Himmelfarb Library's Appropriate Use Policy. Failure to abide by these policies places continued access to electronic resources at risk; publishers may cancel our subscriptions, refuse to renew our subscriptions, or substantially raise the prices of our subscriptions.

Himmelfarb Library's Appropriate Use Policy:

The resources available through Himmelfarb Library's E-Databases/MEDLINE, E-Journals, and E-Texts webpages are resources that have been licensed by Himmelfarb Library and/or the George Washington University for use by faculty, staff and students. In general, these resources permit users to conduct their personal research to support education, research, and clinical practice and to print or download individual copies of materials. These resources do not permit users to otherwise copy or distribute the contents, download large portions of the resources, or re-post the resources on the Internet. By accessing these resources, you agree to abide by Himmelfarb Library's appropriate use policy as well as the policies of the publishers who produce and/or supply the resources. If you have questions regarding appropriate use, please contact Laura Abate at (202) 994-8570 or mlblea@gwumc.edu.

When you access Himmelfarb resources from off-campus location, you must login via a secure proxy (ALADIN, VPN, or EZProxy). You must use your personal login and password only; do not share your login and password with anyone. If you know someone who needs access to Himmelfarb Library, please refer that individual to the Himmelfarb Library Reference Desk at 202-994-2850 or library@gwumc.edu..
