On Thursday November 12th, a representative from Student Technology Services will be in Himmelfarb Library from 3-5:00 pm to resolve your computer issues (laptops, wireless, etc.). Please stop by the Circulation Desk and ask for assistance!

Instructional Technology Summit Series

Himmelfarb Library and the Faculty Affairs Office are pleased to host a series of talks for GWUMC faculty on instructional and information technologies. This series is designed to introduce faculty to new technologies which are being used at GWUMC and engender discussion of best practices for the use of technology in instruction.

This weekly series will occur throughout the fall from 12-1 p.m. in Himmelfarb B103. Light refreshments will be available, and participants are encouraged to bring their lunch to the sessions.

Changing the Face of Medicine

The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, in conjunction with the School of Medicine, invite you to see a traveling exhibition from the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine. The exhibit, Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians, introduces some of the many extraordinary and fascinating women who have studied and practiced medicine in America. Women of all generations and diverse backgrounds are featured in this exhibition celebrating all of America's physicians.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 1st, from 4:00-5:30 pm, in the Himmelfarb Library on the first floor. Refreshments will be served.

Government Role in Health Care?

Is it the Federal Government's responsibility to provide health care for all Americans?

This widely debated question will be the topic of an upcoming health care debate at The George Washington University Medical Center.

Responding affirmatively to the topic will be Mandy Krauthamer, MD, executive director, Doctors for America, and Igor Volsky, health care researcher and blogger, Center for American Progress.   Responding in the negative will be The Honorable Michael C. Burgess, MD, United States congressman from the 26th District in Texas, and David Gratzer, MD, senior fellow, Manhattan Institute for Policy Research.   The debate will be moderated by James L. Scott, MD, dean of GW's School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Annual Book Sale

Just after the fall semester gets underway, the Himmelfarb Annual Book Sale will be held in the Reference nook on the first floor of the Library. The exact dates of the sale will be announced shortly.

This book sale presents a great opportunity to supplement your collection with reference materials and textbooks that have been withdrawn from the collection. Prices range from $.50 to several dollars on the first day of the sale, and on the second day, all materials are free. Hours for the book sale are 8:00 - Midnight.

The 2008 Himmelfarb Art Show

The Himmelfarb Library, in conjunction with Brush Medicine, invite you to attend our annual art show. Come check out artwork by done by your colleagues, students, faculty, and friends.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 3rd, from 4 to 6 pm, in the Himmelfarb Library on the first floor. Refreshments will be served.

NIH Public Access Policy Information Session

Need to make room on your bookshelves?

The 3rd annual Books Without Borders book drive begins today. Drop off your donations in the boxes located in the entranceway to the Himmelfarb Library (just before the security gate) or in the lobby of Ross Hall through April 30, 2008.

Books Without Borders is an organization based here at the GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences, whose mission is to annually donate medical textbooks and literature to medical schools in areas of need. In 2006 and 2007 thousands of books were sent to universities in Eritrea and Rwanda, respectively.

The 2008 collection will benefit the general library at the University of Liberia. This year Books Without Borders will be collecting and donating books from the last 10 years or so in all academic disciplines, with particular emphasis on the general sciences, mathematics, and engineering.

All donations are tax-deductible, so bring your books in before April 30th to help update the library for the students at the University of Liberia.

Himmelfarb's Annual Book Sale –- September 5-6

On Wednesday, September 5th and Thursday September 6th Himmelfarb's annual book sale will be held in the study alcove just beyond the Reference Desk on the library's 1st floor. The book sale is a great opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to acquire useful books for their personal collections. Items being sold include medical, allied sciences, public health, and health services textbooks from Himmelfarb's collection and donations made to the library.

On Wednesday, September 5th, books will be full price. Single books will range from $0.50 to $10.00 and sets cost up to $20.00. On Thursday, September 6th, all remaining books will be free; but, we suggest you visit the sale on Wednesday. Don't take the risk that the books you want will still be available on Thursday.
