New Serials & Systems Librarian

Hello! My name is Steven Brown and I am the new Serials and Systems Librarian at Himmelfarb Library. I will be managing the continued transition from print to electronic journal subscriptions.

I got my start in libraries at Penn State University working in the interlibrary loan office as an undergraduate work study student. I come to Himmelfarb from the Department of the Interior Library where I worked in acquisitions and technical services. I graduated in May with my MLIS from the University of Alabama, where I was introduced to the field of medical librarianship.

New Cataloging and Reserves Specialist -- Jennifer McDaniel

Hello! My name is Jennifer McDaniel and I am the new Cataloging/Reserves specialist at the Himmelfarb Library. I will be working with course reserves and assisting with adding new books to the collection.

I am originally from Alberta and moved to Virginia just over 2 years ago after completing my bachelors degree in biology at Mount Saint Vincent University. During my time at the Mount, I had the privilege of working at the university library and enjoyed helping students and faculty get the information they needed.

New Serials Librarian -- Betsy Appleton

Greetings! My name is Betsy Appleton, and I am the new Digital Serials Integration Librarian at Himmelfarb. I will be working extensively with the electronic and print journal collections in the library.

Though originally from Iowa, I come to GW from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Library in Research Triangle Park, NC. There, I worked in the Serials, Reference, and Interlibrary Loan departments while completing my MSLS at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have also gained serials experience in both the John N. Couch Biology Library and the Geology Library at UNC. My professional interests lie in the areas of serials and electronic resources management, scholarly publishing, and health sciences librarianship.

New Reference Staff -- Katy Rice

Hello! My name is Katy Rice and I have recently started working as the evening and weekend reference specialist here at Himmelfarb. I am originally from Northern Kentucky and came to the DC area approximately two years ago after earning a bachelors degree in psychology from the University of Dayton. I began a research fellowship position at the National Institutes of Health where I assisted doctors in the research and treatment of alcoholic patients. Following my research at NIH, I started GWU’s Doctor of Psychology Program where I am currently pursing my degree.

National Library of Medicine Fellow -- O.C. Tom

Oscencio “O.C.” Tom comes to Himmelfarb as a second year participant in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Associate Fellowship Program.

O.C. received his MLS in May 2005 from the University of Arizona. He completed a graduate internship in Collection Services at the Arizona Health Sciences Library, where he worked on projects related to gift collections and interlibrary loan. He also has experience as a library assistant in the University of Arizona’s Law Library, including records management, managing loose-leaf serials, circulation, and reference. As an undergraduate student, he worked with the Community Health Representative Organization of the Navajo Nation, where he developed a data entry procedures manual for a patient registry database and trained Community Health Representatives in its use. His undergraduate degree is in Communication.

His interests while at NLM included electronic library services, information technologies and networking functions. At NLM he worked on projects related to automatic text extraction and medical imaging. He also continued to expand his knowledge of information seeking behaviors. O.C. is originally from Arizona and was born and raised on the Navajo Reservation.

New Reference Librarian -- Elaine Sullo

My name is Elaine Sullo, and I began working as a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library on September 1, 2006. I will be involved in teaching Problem Based Learning and will serve as the liaison librarian to the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Radiology Departments.

Although I am originally from Connecticut, I came to The George Washington University via Greenville, North Carolina where I worked as a health sciences librarian for over three years, specifically in the areas of nursing and allied health. In addition to health sciences librarianship, I have an interest in adult education, and plan to complete my Masters of Adult Education in May 2007.

New Reference Librarian -- Cynthia Kahn

Cynthia Kahn, MILS, MPH, AHIP, joined the reference and instruction staff of the Himmelfarb Library on July 24th. She has earned Masters degrees from the University of Michigan in Information and Library Science and in Public Health (Health Management and Policy).

Cynthia comes to GWU Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library after one year in Portland, Oregon where she was a reference librarian for Legacy Health System. Prior to that, Cynthia spent six years in the District at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) as Manager of the AAMC Reference Center and Mary H. Littlemeyer Archives.

In addition to providing regular reference and instructional services, Cynthia will be the Library Liaison to the departments of Exercise Science, Prevention and Community Health, Surgery, and Urology.
