Women in Biomedical Research

In 2007, a National Academies' report, Beyond Bias and Barriers, Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering, was published. The NIH followed up on this report with a mentoring workshop in 2007 and a conference held March 4, 2008. The conference explored "best practices that will stimulate future generations of women in biomedical research to see opportunities, rather than barriers, as they envision careers that extend from training to full partnership as leaders in their organizations," according to Barbara Alving, M.D., M.A.C.P.

Take a look at the published meeting proceedings on Women in Biomedical Research: Best Practices for Sustaining Career Success. This report explores the various panel's recommendations on the issues:

  1. Framing the Issues
  2. Models for Advancement in Industry
  3. Military Medical Scientists: An Air Force Model
  4. Models for Advancement in Academia
  5. Best Practice Initiatives at the NIH.

From the Director's Desk

Best wishes for 2009! The staff of the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library looks forward to working with you in the upcoming year. As you can see from the articles included in this newsletter, spring is bringing changes to Himmelfarb. The Library's webpage now features a single search engine for accessing multiple resources. Wireless printing from laptops is available within the Library. The second floor has been cleared of print journals (1980– 2007) and is being converted into a quiet study area. Low-use titles were moved to storage at the Washington Regional Library Consortium and can generally be retrieved within two working days. High-use titles without an electronic archive were moved to on-site storage and can be retrieved within one hour on weekdays. High-use titles with an electronic archive are available in electronic format 24/7 on- and off- campus.

As the Library marks its third year of a nearly all-electronic journal collection, we are undertaking an evaluation of the collection to determine how well it meets the needs of Medical Center faculty, staff, and students and to assess the mix of titles with regard to subject coverage. Members of the Library's administrative team will be calling on each department within the Medical Center to seek input. Please contact either Anne Linton, Director, mlbaml@gwumc.edu, 202-994-1826, or Kathe Obrig, Associate Director Collections & Access Services, mlbkso@gwumc.edu, 202-994-8906, with any questions about the project. Look for reports on our collection evaluation in late spring.

Best wishes for a successful year!

New: Consortium Loan Service

Himmelfarb Library now participates in the Consortium Loan Service (CLS) which provides access to other libraries in the Washington Research Library Consortium. Through the CLS service, GWUMC affiliates can borrow materials from other GWU libraries, as well as from libraries at other area universities including American, Georgetown, Gallaudet, George Mason and Marymount Universities, and the University of the District of Columbia.

To use CLS, you should register your email address in ALADIN by accessing myALADIN and updating or adding your preferred email address in the upper right portion of screen. You can then request books or journal articles by locating items in the ALADIN Catalog, and then clicking on 'Request through Consortium Loan Services'. Materials must be picked up and dropped off at the Gelman Library Circulation Desk.

Additional information including detailed instructions for creating CLS requests is available on the Gelman Library Consortium Loan Service webpage.

Multidatabase Search - Demo Sessions Available 1/16/2009 and 1/30/2009

Himmelfarb has recently launched a new search engine on the library homepage (http://www.gwumc.edu/library) that will enable users to search across 40+ databases with a click of a mouse!

The multi-database search engine will help users determine which resources contain information on specific topics, help facilitate database discovery, and assist in locating pertinent print resources.

Demo sessions will be given on Friday, Jan 16th from 12:15-12:45pm in Himmelfarb B103 and again on Friday, January 30th from 12:15-12:45pm and 3:30-4pm in Himmelfarb B103.

An online video tutorial is also available at: http://www.gwumc.edu/library/tutorials/webfeat_search/.

We welcome you to submit feedback regarding our new search tool at http://www.gwumc.edu/library/services/forms/feedback.cfm.
