Tool of the Week: MEDLINE

MEDLINE and other Ovid databases including AMED, EBM Reviews, Global Health, Health and Psychosocial Instruments, and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts are now available via the new OvidSP interface this week. The new interface includes many popular Ovid searching features while also deploying enhancements in navigation, moving between research articles databases and full-text book and journal content, and creating a personalized research area.

The new Ovid SP interface includes these enhancements:

  • Navigate between a database (e.g. MEDLINE, etc.), Himmelfarb Library's full-text Ovid collections of books and journal articles, and the new My Workspace area using the tabs on the upper navigation bar (e.g. Search, Journals, Books, My Workspace).
  • Move between Ovid databases (e.g. from MEDLINE to Global Health, etc.) by clicking on the 'Ovid Resources' link just above the search box. This area also displays the name of the database which you're currently searching.
  • The Results Manager box has been replaced with a streamlined menu of options for managing your search results. The new menu with options for Print, Email, Export (e.g. to RefWorks), and Add to My Projects is displayed on the horizontal menu bar at the top of each set of search results.
  • The search box remains at the top of each screen even as you move through your search results. You'll no longer need to navigate back to the 'Main Search Page' but can simply scroll to the top of any results screen to initiate a new search.
  • Links to each article's abstract, complete reference, full-text, etc. remain in a box on the right side of the screen. These links are now grouped for easier visual scanning: abstract and references, find similar or citing articles, and links to full-text copies and Himmelfarb Library's holdings.

OvidSP also includes a new area called 'My Projects' which allows you to create a personal Ovid account to create and track information on projects. In My Projects you can, create projects and folders within projects and store citations, searches, full-text, graphics and other items. Please watch for another blog entry with more information on My Projects.
