Google Scholar & RefWorks

Do you use Google Scholar? Did you know that Google Scholar can work with RefWorks?

You can import citations automatically from Google Scholar to RefWorks by changing one simple setting. Here's how to do it:

  1. Access Google Scholar.
    • Note: use Himmelfarb Library's link to Google Scholar (either with the GWireless/VPN or ALADIN) in order to gain access to our full-text journal collection via 'FindIt@GWU Libraries' links.
  2. Click on 'Scholar Preference' which appears to the right of the search box.
  3. Scroll to the bottom, change the setting for 'Bibliography Manager' to 'Show links to import citations into', and use the pull-down menu to choose 'RefWorks'.
  4. Click on 'Save Preference', then start your Google Scholar search.

When you see a resource in Google Scholar which you'd like to add to your RefWorks library, click on the link to 'Import into RefWorks' below the citation. You'll be prompted to login to your RefWorks account, and then the citation will be imported.

Once imported, you'll see the citation displayed in an 'edit' window. This allows you to confirm that all the necessary information has been captured in the transfer from Google Scholar to RefWorks. If you are importing a journal article citation, the information will likely be complete, but if you're importing a report citation, then it's a good idea to review the citation and add any additional information that you want to record.

If you are new to RefWorks, be sure to ask us for assistance. Several online tutorials are also available to assist you:
