Welcome, summer students!

Greetings from the Himmelfarb Library to all summer students. The library is less crowded and more quiet during the summer, but we want you to know that our services are available to you the same as always. Here are some tips and hints for using Himmelfarb’s resources:
  • Reference librarians are available and happy to help you conduct your research or find things in the library. We are available Monday-Thursday 8:30 am - 8:00 pm, Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, and Saturdays 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm. Visit the Ask a Librarian page for contact information, including information on how to Instant Message with us.
  • When borrowing items placed on Reserve for your class, please try to bring the call number for the item to the Circulation desk. Call numbers can be found in the Reserves portion of our catalog by instructor name, course name, or course number, or in the white binder at the Circulation desk. We are happy to help you find Reserve items, but it is helpful if you have either your class information or the exact title or author of the book.
  • Don’t forget about electronic textbooks. Himmelfarb offers 120+ electronic medical textbooks on our E-Texts page, and all GW students have access to the Gelman library’s collection as well. Ebrary is a great collection with thousands of full-text electronic books for a wide variety of topics.
  • Our electronic resources are available to you 24/7 from anywhere. Off-campus access instructions are here.
  • Scopus is a very large new database you may want to try for your literature searches. It is an interdisciplinary database of citations from over 15,000 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to medical literature, it contains articles on a very wide variety of topics, which makes it particularly helpful for Public Health topics.
  • RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic citation software package similar to EndNote or Reference Manager. With RefWorks, you can import citations directly from multiple databases, organize and edit them, and easily create bibliographies in over 250 different formats. RefWorks is available on our E-Databases page and an FAQ is available here (pdf).
This has been just a few of the highlights, but Himmelfarb offers many other electronic and print resources that may be helpful to you with your academic work. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions.

We hope your summer classes go well!
