Anticipated Project(s): Coaching High School Students
The 2009-10 EHS ISCOPES team will build on the work of last year's team. It is anticipated that team members will provide:
1) Academy students coaching towards higher education, health careers, and college profiles based on student interest in specialized fields on individual and small group basis
2) Classroom presentations to Academy students based on topics to be chosen by Academy students
3) A Saturday GW health science campus activity
4) Direction and support to a school and/or community based health fair with the students of the Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.

Expectations of Team Members
Team members will be expected to go to Eastern High School to work directly with their group of students in coaching towards higher education, and learning and planning about the topic areas that they will cover in the health fair. The time commitment and trips to EHS vary per month with more frequent visits as we get closer to the health fair.

Past Projects:

The 2008-09 ISCOPES team worked closely with sophomores, juniors, and seniors as health professional mentors and teachers and successfully completed a wide range of projects. The team aided the students in college preparation by assisting with college applications and financial aid applications. The team executed the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) training, provided an overview on health care professions/academic tracks/programs, and aided interested students in the DC HAPP application preparation. Moreover, the team provided lessons for interview skill-building which covered etiquette, dress, and commonly asked questions. Other classroom lessons included topics such as dining etiquette, nutrition and exercise, and chronic illnesses. The team also actively engaged the students to participate in the Homeless Walkathon planned in conjunction with EHS and The Unity Health Foundation and GWU Simulation Day. During GWU SIM day, students were able to travel to different stations to learn about physical fitness, the anatomy of the human body, health research, physical therapy and basic medical tasks such as intubation and starting an IV. This day consisted of a physical therapy station, a gross anatomy lab station, and a simulation station where the students could practice setting up IV's on a patient.

Last year, the 2007-08 team built on the health fair experience by creating a team a group biography (hard copy Facebook like) book, and Passport to a Healthy Life Symposium on the GWU campus. The symposium consisted of six interactive workshops, addressing needs established by a previous survey. The workshops had an interdisciplinary focus and included diabetes, heart disease, relationships/communication, finding health information, "hands-on"/physical exam. Additionally, the team solicited donations and fundraised to pay for the symposium's costs.

Eastern High School was a new ISCOPES partner in the 2006-07 year. Much time was spent in establishing the partnership. That year the team collaborated with the high school students and the instructor within the Academy of Health and Medical Services to present a health fair in April 2007 for the high school entitled, "How PHAT (Physically Healthy Academically Together) Are You?"
