Anticipated Project(s): Coaching High School Students
The 2008-9 EHS ISCOPES team build on the work of last year's team. It is anticipated that team members will 1) provide Academy students coaching towards higher education and health careers on individual and small group basis; 2) classroom presentations to Academy students-topics to be chosen by Academy students; 3) provide a Saturday GW health science campus activity.
The 2007-08 ISCOPES team asserts that the success of last year's activities offers a strong starting point for future collaborative efforts. Possibilities include mentoring and providing workshops on vital signs, anatomy and physiology, resume writing and interviewing techniques. The EHS students and instructor have been very receptive to ISCOPES participation within their program. The instructor at Eastern High School is confident that ISCOPES can further serve the high school and community in many different areas.
Expectations of Team Members
Team members will be expected to go to Eastern High School to work directly with their group of students in learning and planning about the topic areas that they will cover in the health fair. The time commitment and trips to EHS vary per month with more frequent visits as we get closer to the health fair.
Past Projects
Eastern High School was a new ISCOPES partner in the 2006-07 year. Much time was spent in establishing the partnership. That year the team collaborated with the high school students and the instructor within the Academy of Health and Medical Services to present a health fair in April 2007 for the high school entitled, "How PHAT (Physically Healthy Academically Together) Are You?"
Last year, the 2007-08 team built on the health fair experience by creating a team a group biography (hard copy Facebook like) book, and Passport to a Healthy Life Symposium on the GWU campus. The symposium consisted of six interactive workshops, addressing needs established by a previous survey. The workshops had an interdisciplinary focus and included diabetes, heart disease, relationships/communication, finding health information, "hands-on"/physical exam. Additionally, the team solicited donations and fundraised to pay for the symposium's costs.
Site Description
Eastern High School is a public senior high school in Northeast DC, which hosts a unique Health and Medical Sciences Academy within the high school for students interested in careers in the health fields.
