Anticipated Project(s): Health Information Partners-Teaching Health Literacy
The Health Information Partners team works with two different organizaitons. As part of the Academy of Hope organizational partnership, the ISCOPES team will plan and teach a curriculum for two 7-week semesters of the pre-GED science class for adult students studying for the GED exam. Our curriculum focuses on health and integrates Internet based research to teach students where to find and use reliable health information. Students will be expected to help create lesson plans and visit the Academy of Hope on Wednesday mornings from 9am to 10:30am to teach the classes during the late fall and early spring semesters.

In addition, the team will help organize and teach hands-on health information workshops for the public at GW and other locations as requested.

There are many opportunities for students to interact with the community through HIPS, including monthly street outreach advocacy on HIV in Ward 8, and various health fairs.

Expectations of Team Members
--Two hours teaching classes at the Academy of Hope each week during the late fall and early spring semesters (7 weeks each)
--Monthly ISCOPES meetings to plan the AOH curriculum
--Optional monthly outreach visit to Ward 8 to distribute HIV information (3rd Saturdays)
--Optional technical support at health information workshops sponsored by HIPS partners

Past Projects:
The 2008-2009 team at the Academy of Hope planned and taught a science course to pre-GED students. The course emphasized environmental health issues and included classroom exercises, utilization of computers to identify reliable health information, and projects that challenged students to meet objectives that will help them succeed on their GED tests.
