International Fellowship Programs

The goal of the Fellowship Training Program is to increase the knowledge and skills of the fellow in any particular subspecialty beyond that of a Residency Training Program.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be non-US, non-Canadian citizens, and non US Permanent resident visa holders;
  • Applicants must be American Board Certified; applicants with no American board certification might be evaluated;
  • Applicants must be financially sponsored by their government or by a home country health institution;
  • Applicants must hold a currently valid certificate issued by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and meet all other departmental eligibility requirements;
  • All international fellows must be sponsored on a J-1 clinical visa;
  • Applications for fellowship must be submitted to the Office of International Medicine Programs at The George Washington University Medical Center at least nine months prior to the anticipated start date.

Educational Programs

Each clinical department has its own educational program, but most educational activities include frequent bedside rounds, case presentations, formal lectures and teaching conferences.

Cost Estimates and Payment Procedures

A charge of $85,000 per year for each full-time fellow will be charged to the sponsoring institution. This amount will cover educational, clinical and administrative costs. In addition, the sponsor will be paying the fellow a salary equivalent to the salaries of his colleagues at GWUMC and in accordance with ACGME regulations.
