Dedicated to Saving Lives and Improving Health The American Red Cross national research program was established in 1961 and expanded in 1987 with the creation of the Jerome H. Holland Laboratory for the Biomedical Sciences, Rockville, Md. The program has a proud history of significant contributions to biomedical science, blood safety, plasma-derived therapeutics and transfusion technology.

Today, Holland Laboratory is one of the world's foremost blood research facilities and the heart of our research and development program. Its work is supplemented by about a dozen Red Cross Blood Services regions conducting their own local research and development. Most of this local research is undertaken in collaboration with the Holland Laboratory.
