The Department of Immunology was officially constituted
in July 2000 and was
based on the mission of George Washington University to develop and
re-kindle strong basic research efforts at the Medical School. Modeled on
the precedent of the Dutch Red Cross and the Dept. of Immunology in
Amsterdam, the department has faculty members at two primary sites: the
Holland Lab of the American Red Cross and Ross Hall on the GW campus. In
addition, secondary appointees have labs at the NIH and Children's Research
Institute. Dr. David Scott, Head of the Immunology Department at the
Holland Lab was selected as the first Chair of Immunology. In 2001, the
first two recruits, Dr. Nancy Noben-Trauth (from the NIH) and Dr. David
Leitenberg (from Yale) joined the department at Ross Hall. The department
also houses the Flow Cytometry facility for the Medical school to complement
cores at the Holland Lab.
