Certificate, Police Science
Associates Degree, Police Science
Bachelors Degree, Police Science
Recent years have seen fundamental changes in the securing of public safety. The types of incidents that police professionals are called upon to prevent, investigate, and control have changed profoundly. In addition to their law enforcement responsibilities, police now face the challenging new demands of homeland security and attendant "first response" duties. This complex new role merits a fresh perspective on the nature and scope of the applied knowledge our police forces require.

Master of Science in Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases
The mission of the M.S. Degree in Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases is to combine the strengths of two academic departments at the George Washington University Medical Center (GWUMC), one in the School of Public Health and Health Services (Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics) and the other in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (Department of Microbiology and Tropical Medicine) in order to train a new generation of researchers and public health practitioners. Graduates of the M.S. Program will have an in-depth understanding of the major laboratory, clinical, and public health aspects of humankind's microbial pathogens, and acquire epidemiologic skills relevant to the prevention and control of problems arising from infectious diseases and modern biotechnologies. Areas of emphasis will include: the design and analysis of epidemiologic data; emerging infections; tropical diseases; class A, B, C biological agents linked to bioterrorism; and applications of genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics.

Certificate, Aviation Safety and Security
The Aviation Institute is an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort established by three institutes within The George Washington University: the GWU Transportation Research Institute, the International Institute of Tourism Studies, and the Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management. The GWU Aviation Institute is the first attempt by a major university in the United States to combine the efforts of federal, state, and local government within industry and academia to promote a comprehensive approach to safety and security issues facing the aviation industry in the new millennium.

Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Transportation Safety Engineering
Today's complex transportation issues and automotive designs require the ability to synthesize data from diverse disciplines to find innovative solutions to safety concerns. Automobile safety combines advanced restraint systems including airbags and automatic retracting seat belts, anti-lock brakes, sophisticated structure designs and crumple zones, and safer occupant compartments. The design and analysis of these components is placing a demand for engineers with interdisciplinary backgrounds covering a spectrum of areas including nonlinear structural analysis, biomechanics, thermo fluid dynamics, computer simulation, and statistics. Proper education in this field will enable you to pursue a rewarding career with direct contribution to society by saving human lives and minimizing injuries. Furthermore, with a focus in this area, you can pursue other engineering careers in highway, aviation, and railway safety as well as government legislation.

Technical Security |
|
Master of Science in Engineering Management
The concentration core and elective courses contribute to a comprehensive set of learning objectives related to the systemic engineering and architecting of security in the contemporaneous enterprise. This concentration is not exclusively about computer security, network security, or cryptography, although it contains elements of each of those disciplines. The concentration is a disciplined approach to understanding the management, technical, and legal issues associated with the security of information from a multi-phased approach, resulting in optimal security within risk tolerances. The focus is education rather than training, teaching students how to think about information security challenges in a structured framework. Topics covered include elements of computer security but also include elements of personnel security, physical security, facilities security, and operational security.
