Students Named to Homeland Security Institute Intern Program

Six graduate students from The George Washington University have been selected to participate in the graduate internship program of the newly established, $130 million Homeland Security Institute. The selection of these students to participate in the internship program reflects The George Washington University’s status as one of the Homeland Security Institute’s partner universities. The internship program was only open to students from the five HSI partner universities.

The internship, which was set up with the help of GW’s Homeland Security Policy Institute, is a major step forward in the HSPI’s mission to increase opportunities for GW students to work in the homeland security sector.

The mission of the Homeland Security Institute is to assist the Department of Homeland Security in formulating and addressing important homeland security issues, particularly those involving policy and security where scientific, technical and analytical expertise is required. The students selected for the graduate internship program will have the unique opportunity of interacting with the nation’s top leaders and thinkers within the Department of Homeland Security and the private sector while helping the HSI to accomplish their mission.

Beyond the excellent opportunity the internship presents to become familiar with the issues facing the Department of Homeland Security, these students will receive a generous stipend for their work. They will also have the opportunity for full-time employment after graduation.

The names of the six students selected to take part in the HSI graduate internship are:

  • Mary Lynn McKeon, Master of Public Health student
  • Scott Bernard, Master of Public Policy student
  • Leslie Giacomini , Master of Criminal Justice student
  • Sondra Mendelson , Master of Engineering Management student
