Parney Albright Roundtable
The Homeland Security Policy Institute was proud to host Dr. Penrose (“Parney”) Albright, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security (Plans, Programs, and Budgets) at the HSPI’s monthly policy roundtable on June 23 rd. The roundtable discussion focused on the application of science and technology towards solving the many cross-cutting problems facing the Department of Homeland Security as it continues to protect the United States from terrorist attack.
Dr. Albright led the discussion by framing the many problems that DHS has come into contact with while trying to mobilize the science and technology sectors of the American economy towards developing products useful in homeland security. The panel addressed the increasing need for focus on producing actual usable products instead of scientifically valuable research in the national laboratories. Liability issues surrounding vaccine production were examined. Finally, Dr. Albright discussed the development of specific programs intended to increase the ability to detect and respond to chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear attack.
The roundtable, which was made up of HSPI Steering Committee members, GW faculty, and other policy leaders from around the country, engaged Dr. Albright with energetic and productive discussion on the character and potential solution of these problems. Frank Cilluffo, Associate Vice-President of Homeland Security at GW and Executive Director of the HSPI, hosted the session and helped guide discussion.
