The George Washington University Sonography Program gives students several options through which to meet personal goals for their sonography education. They may pursue either a degree or a certificate. Further, whether in the degree or the certificate options, they may declare clinical practice choices in General, Cardiac or Vascular Sonography; or a combination of any two of these three clinical practice areas. For example whether in the degree or certificate option, a student may choose a single clinical practice area such as General Sonography or dual clinical practice areas such as General and Vascular Sonography. Individualized programs of study will depend on the student’s selection of degree v. certificate options and their choice of clinical practice area/s.
All curricular options involve full-time commitment of 40 hours per week of structured activity. Lectures and scan labs are on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and select weeknights. Clinical rotations run concurrently with coursework each semester, during weekdays. Students complete 1680 hours of clinical rotations if pursuing a single clinical practice choice; and an additional 500 hours if pursuing two areas of clinical practice.
Students matriculating into the BS degree must take didactic coursework in all three areas of General, Vascular and Cardiac sonography. Yet their clinical practice choice will concentrate on just one or two of these areas. In addition to the coursework and clinical practica, students in the baccalaureate option will complete upper division core courses such as management, health policy, trends and innovations in healthcare, psychosocial aspects of health, leadership and ethics.
