Mission and Focus

Introduction

Since 1972, the Physician Assistant Program of The George Washington University Medical Center has been educating health care professionals.  The Program is an integral part of The George Washington University Medical Center, a nationally recognized academic health center located in the Nation's capital.  The following Program vision, mission and goals are consistent with those of the Medical Center at large.

Mission Statement

The George Washington Physician Assistant Program educates Physician Assistant students to practice evidence-based medicine, advocate for patients, and serve their communities.

Vision Statement

The George Washington Physician Assistant program will be a preeminent leader in physician assistant education. Through shared transformative experiences and discovery, our students, alumni, and faculty will emerge as leaders committed to health for all.

Program Goals

  • To educate health professionals who possess superior knowledge and skills.   
  • To prepare physician assistant students to function effectively as members of the health care team in all clinical settings.
  • To foster an awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of communities.
  • To encourage professional involvement and service.
  • To instill a commitment to continuous personal and professional development.

Guiding Principles

The philosophy, values and beliefs of the PA faculty guide the educational principles upon which the curriculum is built. The faculty values:

  • Clinical problem solving using evidence based medicine
  • Integration and application to optimize learning
  • Team work
  • Leadership
  • Self-direction and active participation in learning

Finally, the faculty believes that lifelong learning is essential to quality clinical practice.
