Physician Assistant Program
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum science and cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 and complete the following minimum prerequisites from an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States:
- Two semesters of biological sciences (human anatomy and physiology strongly recommended, botany not acceptable)
- Two semesters of chemistry for science majors (one semester should either be organic or biochemistry)
- Two semesters of psychology (general psychology required, abnormal psychology strongly recommended)
All prerequisites must be completed with a grade of B- or better. Each course must be at least 3-credit hours. Applicants may apply to the program with one outstanding prerequisite but prerequisites must be completed prior to the beginning of the program. College seniors are eligible to apply provided that they will have fulfilled all the baccalaureate requirements before matriculating.
All applicants must be in good academic standing.
The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) must have been taken within the past five years, except for those applicants already awarded a post-baccalaureate degree. Official GRE reports must be received by GW no later than October 1st for an application to be considered for admission.
Note: Our GRE code is 5246. DO NOT use code 5268; this is the Medical Center code. If you have any questions concerning the GRE call 1-800-GRE-CALL (1-800-473-2255).
Six months or 960 hours of direct patient care experience is required. An additional 6 months of health-related experience is highly recommended.
Tuition and fees are subject to change each year. Students also should budget for related costs such as housing, meals, books and supplies. Detailed financial aid information will be provided upon acceptance.
Note: The Physician Assistant Program uses the online application system CASPA (Central Application Service for Physician Assistants). Please go to the CASPA Web site at http://caspaonline.org/ to begin the application process. In addition to the CASPA application, all applicants must submit a GW Supplemental Application to the Health Sciences Office of Admissions.
The fee for using CASPA is based on the number of programs the applicant designates. A limited number of application fee waivers are available. Meeting CASPA’s eligibility criterion for a fee waiver does not guarantee a waiver will be granted for supplemental program fees.
All applicants to the Physician Assistant Program (2-year MSHS or 3-year PA/MPH) must submit the GW Supplemental Application. We will honor the Supplemental Application only from applicants whom we have received the CASPA application.
If you are accepted, an offer of admission will be sent to you. The offer of admission is valid for the semester stated in the admissions letter. Upon notification of acceptance, you must return your declaration of intent with a check or money order covering the tuition deposit and the orientation fee. This will be required of all students, including those readmitted. The deposit applied to your tuition and is not refundable.
NOTE: You will not be eligible for registration until your Declaration of Intent is signed and returned.
