What attracted me to George Washington University was its ability to be flexible and open to addressing the evolving opportunities in a rapidly changing health care system in the United States. My professional interests are healthcare quality, organizational change and workforce culture. I strive to understand the needs and circumstances of adult learners (as one myself) and enjoy supporting the success of my students. My academic philosophy is reflected in this quote, “The most important breeze that blows . . . is your own current of thought.”

I am an associate professor within the Department of Nursing Education and I have just joined the faculty as of August 2007. My first love is geriatrics and I have focused on the care of older adults since my early graduate school days in the 1970s. I recently completed a Doctorate in Ministry at Wisdom University in San Francisco, Calif., where my dissertation focused on the use of narrative to study transformation in the lives of professional nurses. I maintain a clinical practice as a nurse practitioner, ethicist consultant in Adult Protective Service in Fairfax County in Virginia.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the teaching process is watching an individual take on board a range of new skills and knowledge, regardless of learning style or prior experience. This is especially relevant in health policy and research, where the knowledge base evolves swiftly, and where colleagues and students can bring so many unique perspectives to bear.

As a result of being part of a military family I’ve had the unique opportunity to live in 5 different countries. Each location enabled me to do what I love and that is to be both a teacher and a student. Through this invaluable experience I was able to see that the language of learning is truly universal. I believe that when students are provided an opportunity to stretch their minds and challenge their current beliefs and ideas, then the spark of discovery ignites. I feel that curiosity and the quest for knowledge is contagious when the student and teacher collaborate together and encouragement is stronger and more helpful than correction. I am honored to be part of the NCQA and GW team launching this exciting new Master’s program.

I started my career abroad as a full time teaching faculty after I graduated from college. However, I soon discovered the joy of balancing student teaching with non-teaching work in a related field. The symbiotic relationship between the two domains of activities has been very rewarding for me. Teaching as an adjunct faculty at GWU while working at NCQA on healthcare quality offers that same symbiotic relationship. I am expecting my teaching will be directly informed by my work experience in healthcare quality assessment at NCQA while the things I learn from teaching and student interaction will help put a sharper focus on my work at NCQA. My goal for teaching is to foster learning by striking a balance between conveying state of the art subject matter knowledge and inspiring and challenging students to think critically so they can connect the link nodes between seemingly disparate ideas and concepts. I look forward to making this goal a reality and thank GWU for the opportunity

I approach teaching like I’m a bed & breakfast owner. I assume you have chosen to come to my home and have me serve you. I will do my best to make the experience comfortable, interesting, and useful; I will provide you highlights of the area in which you are touring, but I expect that you will take what you want of my information and make your own choices about what to use. I don’t expect everyone to like all of what I offer, but I will do my best to help you get out of your time with me everything that you want.

I am extremely excited about joining the George Washington University School of Nursing team. For the past three years, I have had worked in diverse sectors of academia. From these experiences, I have gained a distinct familiarity with many different student populations and obtained extensive knowledge of higher education programs, policies, and requirements. As Executive Coordinator of the Health Care Quality, Palliative Care, and GMU programs, I will utilize this knowledge to focus my attention on ensuring that the needs of all DNE students, staff, and faculty are met and that they have everything they require to make their time at GWU an indisputable success!
