As the Chairman of the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership, I believe that the single most important service and contribution that we can make to our customers - students, faculty, and staff alike - is to model the way of our departmental name, and bring a level of leadership to the facilitation of learning and the delivery of educational programs and services that change the manner in which each of our customers impacts the clinical worlds, in which they live, work, and contribute.

Marshall Goldsmith the preeminent executive coach states that:”What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.” It is this commitment to one’s own continuing improvement and development partially through education that I am honored to be part of the GW faculty. With over 25 year of experience and exposure to a variety of leadership and management positions in a variety of health care organizations and systems I hope to offer and gain insights though this opportunity. Excellence in leading health care quality improvement efforts is a journey and not a destination for all of us to achieve together.

As a result of being part of a military family I’ve had the unique opportunity to live in 5 different countries. Each location enabled me to do what I love and that is to be both a teacher and a student. Through this invaluable experience I was able to see that the language of learning is truly universal. I believe that when students are provided an opportunity to stretch their minds and challenge their current beliefs and ideas, then the spark of discovery ignites. I feel that curiosity and the quest for knowledge is contagious when the student and teacher collaborate together and encouragement is stronger and more helpful than correction. I am honored to be part of the NCQA and GW team launching this exciting new Master’s program.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the teaching process is watching an individual take on board a range of new skills and knowledge, regardless of learning style or prior experience. This is especially relevant in health policy and research, where the knowledge base evolves swiftly, and where colleagues and students can bring so many unique perspectives to bear.

I approach teaching like I’m a bed & breakfast owner. I assume you have chosen to come to my home and have me serve you. I will do my best to make the experience comfortable, interesting, and useful; I will provide you highlights of the area in which you are touring, but I expect that you will take what you want of my information and make your own choices about what to use. I don’t expect everyone to like all of what I offer, but I will do my best to help you get out of your time with me everything that you want.

In my 20 years in health care, I’ve had the privilege to speak to and teach a wide variety of audiences and have discovered a real passion for teaching. It shouldn’t be surprising, having grown up with an elementary school teacher for a mother and seeing the impact she had on her students. It is a real privilege to work with diverse professionals on such an important topic as continual improvement in the quality of care and service in our health care system.

Adjunct Professor

As an adjunct assistant professor, I am dedicated to enabling others to learn and become all that they are able to be within their chosen discipline. To that end I challenge, question, prod, assist, and encourage. My ongoing hope is that, in so doing, my efforts may contribute to grooming genuine, principled, effective learners capable of leading in the 21st century.

What attracted me to George Washington University was its ability to be flexible and open to addressing the evolving opportunities in a rapidly changing health care system in the United States. My professional interests are healthcare quality, organizational change and workforce culture. I strive to understand the needs and circumstances of adult learners (as one myself) and enjoy supporting the success of my students. My academic philosophy is reflected in this quote, “The most important breeze that blows . . . is your own current of thought.”
