MSN: Family Nurse Practitioner
Students in the FNP Program are required to complete three on-campus components. Students are responsible for all travel-related expenses.
All MSN students must attend the Nursing Leadership Institute. The insitute is attached to Nurs 203: Nursing Leadership. This three-day on-campus component is always held in the summer semester and generally in mid-July (it directly follows the Primary Care Seminar). Students are notified of the institute dates at least six months in advance.
When students register for Nurs 203, they are automatically enrolled in the Leadership Institute. The institute is preceded by seven weeks of online course work. Prominent health care leaders instruct students on implementing leadership skills into daily practice.
The institute also provides students with the opportunity to meet one another and their faculty members, consult with their advisers, visit campus, and tour Washington, D.C.
Students must attend the Nurs 223: Primary Care Seminar. This five-day seminar is always held in the summer semester and generally in early July. Students are notified of the seminar dates at least six months in advance.
Students' clinical skills are evaluated and enhanced through hands-on clinical experiences and instruction. Students work with faculty to integrate the content from Nurs 220: Advanced Pathophysiology; Nurs 234: Pharmacology; and Nurs 222: Advanced Health Assessment. These courses must be completed prior to enrolling in the seminar.
All nurse practitioner students are required to complete a final skills assessment. This assessment is held two days before graduation so students can participate in graduation ceremonies. This component is comprised of testing with standardized patients, a comprehensive exam, and sessions on special clinical skills.
This institute provides students with a broader perspective on end-of-life care issues and brings together a diverse group of national experts and health care professionals. This three-day event is held in mid-July. Attendees work with an interdisciplinary group of lecturers and teachers in fields such as palliative care, hospice, counseling, divinity, and nursing.
