The End-of-Life Care Programs will prepare you to enter or advance in the interdisciplinary, challenging, and rewarding field of end-of-life care. Of the almost 3 million deaths occurring annually in the United States, the vast majority of these deaths will involve the services of a wide range of professionals including nurses, physicians, physician assistants, social workers, counselors, chaplains and funeral directors. With more people needing care, there are fewer people available to give it or assist in its delivery. And for those of us who are currently involved in this care, many feel that there is a need for formal academic training to meet the increasing demands and complex issues, both professional and personal, in the care of our chronically ill and dying patients and their loved ones. The programs in end-of-life care have been created to help meet these needs. The programs were developed to offer core courses in the end-of-care concentration that provide insights, skills and expertise in three broad areas of study; grief and bereavement, the business of dying and spiritual care. In addition, students in the programs are given the freedom to choose from an array of elective courses to meet their individual and professional needs and provide opportunities to:
- broaden knowledge, gain new insights and experience in the care of individuals and their families at the end of life
- network with fellow end-of-life care providers around the nation from a wide range of professional backgrounds
- develop pathways for career advancement
