This is what happens when you let a paramedic/firefighter attend graduate school. During a 25 year career with a large urban county fire department I worked in every division of the department, retiring as the acting EMS Division administrator. Inspired by my experience as an adult learner, my goal was to become a university-level educator.

I was offered the position of medical director in the spring of 2008 and was excited to accept. The Emergency Health Services Program offers an expansive and consistent knowledge to the next generation of leaders in prehospital care. As a former paramedic and now practicing emergency medicine physician, I enjoy bridging the gap that so commonly occurs between prehospital and in-hospital care. Ideally, I want to encourage our students to be innovative in their practice and stimulate an inquisitive approach to their patients and treatments. I am excited by the prospect to encourage not only our students, but also our policy makers, to promote the growth and enhancement of prehospital care to our communities. The opportunities for research in this field, paired with the teaching and training of these students is ideal, all with the added benefit of being in such a dynamic and international arena as Washington, D.C..
