Doctor of Physical Therapy Program
As an institution of higher learning our role is to provide leadership to the health care community in the form of scholarship, research and service. This leadership can only be achieved by developing linkages among various professional communities that will ultimately be affected by the success or failure of the academic programs in physical therapy. It is through these bonds that the Physical Therapy Program expects to ensure ongoing assessment and continuous improvement in practice. It is through the collaborative efforts of all members of the Professional Advisory Committee that the learning community in the Physical Therapy Program can be expanded to allow our leadership to flourish and effectively support quality practice.
The Mission of the Professional Advisory Committee is to provide a forum for open dialogue among professionals committed to the development of a learning community to foster growth within and between the academic and clinical communities. This forum will allow both communities to access the continuously changing information throughout the various constituent communities that would otherwise be difficult to access. Through this information gathering process the Physical Therapy Program will be in a better position to ensure that it is adequately preparing its students for the “real world” of professional practice while at the same time adequately meeting the educational needs of the professional community at large. Actions of the committee will allow the academic institution to better understand the changing demands of clinical practice and the clinical institutions to learn more about the demands of academia.
The Professional Advisory Committee is not a decision making body, rather, it serves to provide counsel and recommendations to the Physical Therapy Program Faculty that will allow for continuous improvements in the delivery of quality educational services that will meet the demands of current and future clinical environments. Formation of this committee serves the following ends:
- To broaden the learning community of The George Washington University Physical Therapy Program to include, not only students, academicians and researchers, but members of the clinical and professional communities at large.
- To enhance the leadership role of The George Washington University’s Physical Therapy Program within the health care community through the development of partnerships with local schools, clinics and professional organizations.
- To provide a forum for committed professionals to offer advice to the academic program as it strives to meet the needs of its current and future students.
- To access the wealth of knowledge present in the professional community to better prepare students to meet the ever-changing demands of the health care community today and in the future.
- To establish a mechanism for continuous needs assessment to more efficiently and effectively build and refine programs that meet the educational needs of the healthcare community.
- To provide a forum for committed professionals to act as advocates to assist The George Washington University’s Physical Therapy Program in meeting the ongoing challenges it faces which include, but are not limited to, marketing, student recruitment, recruitment of qualified faculty, research, funding for research and program development, etc.
