Tips for Preparing a Strong Admissions Application

There are several components involved in submitting a strong, and potentially successful, application for admission.  Below are some tips on how to do this:

1.  Be aware of deadlines and program admission requirements. The application and all supporting documentations (e.g., fees, statement of purpose, resume, letters of recommendation, professional licenses, transcripts, test scores etc) must be received by the deadline in order for the application to be reviewed.  (The deadline for Fall 2010 is February 26, 2010.)  Applications received beyond the deadline will not be considered.

2.  You must meet the minimum requirements for GPA.(3.3 or higher)

3.  Applicants to the post-master’s DNP must possess an MSN with a concentration as either a Nurse Practitioner or a concentration in nursing leadership and management.

4.  Letters of Reference:

Submit two letters of reference.  Recommendations are weighed heavily in the consideration for admission.  Use references that are current.  Obtain references from instructors or individuals who served in a supervisory capacity for you.  Choose individuals who have had the opportunity to observe your work ethic and/or academic ability closely (e.g. instructors, supervisors).  Choose individuals who are willing to submit a strong, positive recommendation on your behalf.

5.  Resume:

Take the time to update your resume.  Be sure that the resume you submit is current and specifically geared towards applying for admission to the DNP program.  If you submit an out of date resume, it will be noticed.  For example, your resume should not include a line that indicates that your goal is to obtain a job as a nurse practitioner.

4.  Write a clear and concise Statement of Purpose; paying close attention to the guidelines (see below).  This written essay is an extremely important part of your application. The essay is the only part of the application an admissions officer has to judge your ability to communicate and synthesize ideas.  Highlight major points and summarize the details.  Take your time, revise as many times as you need and be sure to proofread before submitting.

Guidelines of DNP Statement of Purpose

compose a 500-750 word essay that includes the following:
a). Academic and career goals and a discussion of how the DNP Program will contribute to these goals.
b). A discussion of a major issue in contemporary nursing and how this issue should be addressed.
