Doctor of Nursing Practice Program

Less than three years after its creation, the Department of Nursing Education at The George Washington University enrolled its first cohort for the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program in fall 2007.

An alternative to research-focused doctoral programs, the DNP advances professional nursing roles in clinical practice and nursing leadership and management. Students enter either at the post-baccalaureate or post-graduate level.

The Department of Nursing Education has designed DNP courses to increase clinical competency, refine critical-thinking skills, and develop stronger decision-making and evaluative abilities. A clinical research project immerses students in a practice environment, and lays the foundation for future scholarship and success in the local, national, and global nursing community.

The DNP utilize a distance-education format, with selected on-campus experiences. BSN-prepared students complete 72 to 78 credits of course work; MSN-entry students complete 36 credits. Near the conclusion of the program, students visit campus for one day to present a project proposal to their faculty committee. Then, shortly before graduation, students return to campus to defend their project and participate in graduation ceremonies.

The department is currently accepting applications for the fall 2009 semester. All materials must be received by March 30, 2009. Information requests should be directed to the department at 202.994.7901 or at nursing@gwumc.edu.
