Clinical Management and Leadership Dual Degree Program

We have exciting news for students in our Clinical Management and Leadership and Clinical Research Administration undergraduate programs. Effective Fall 2011, new admits will start a 120 semester hour Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) Program.

We moved from the 132 semester hour program to the shorter 120 semester hour program so that our students have a faster pathway to graduation. Overall, students complete 12 fewer credits in the new program. Since many of our students work full-time and take classes part-time, this saves an average of one academic year of coursework—saving our students time and money.

Moreover, we also increased the required number of GW credits to 60 semester hours. Our fully flexible asynchronous courses are designed to meet the needs of busy professionals, while maintaining the standard of academic rigor for which GW is known. The fundamental structure remains the same, but we believe the changes mean a significant improvement in the quality of the program and the experience of our students.

In order to accommodate the updates, we reduced the number of required electives and will introduce a handful of new courses in the next year. The new courses will address critical health care competency areas to further prepare our graduates for the next step in their careers.

If you have questions about the updated curriculum, please do not hesitate to contact Catherine at hspcaw@gwumc.edu or by phone at 202-994-3564.

Program Requirements

This multi-level dual degree program offers academically qualified individuals a seamless and accelerated pathway for completing both the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) and the Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) in Clinical Management and Leadership. Undergraduate and graduate degrees will be conferred sequentially, with the BSHS awarded upon completion of 120 credits (9 of which are taken for graduate credit). The MSHS is awarded following completion of an additional 27 credits of graduate coursework.

Note: If you are a graduate of the Associate of Science in Health Science Laboratory Technology Degree, please contact hspcaw@gwumc.edu for more information on your specialized program of study.

BSHS in Clinical Management and Leadership (120 credits)

The BSHS portion of the dual degree program is divided into three components: general education (27 semester hours), advanced standing and electives (39 semester hours), and distance education health sciences courses (54 semester hours). Students must complete at least 60 semester hours of GW coursework.

Electives (39 semester hours)

Previously earned college-level coursework will be evaluated for transfer as elective credit. Acceptable transfer coursework must be: (1) college-level, (2) academic in nature, (3) completed at a regionally accredited institution, and (4) earned with a C or better (C- grades do not transfer).

We award academic credit for some C-School level military training. Additionally, up to 39 credits of advanced standing may be awarded to graduates of non-college based health sciences programs who present appropriate documentation and professional certification (e.g. EMT or RN license).
