Research Proposal Outline

The following outline is to be followed for submissions of small grant proposals to the GW Nursing Honor Society. The proposal should be limited to eight pages of text. Tables Instruments and Documentation of Human Subjects Training can be submitted in the appendices. An abstract (includes design, aims and methods in 200 words) is to be on a separate page and not counted as part of the text.

I. Body of Proposal

  1. Purpose/Specific Aims
    1. Clarity
    2. Consistency among purpose, aims and hypotheses or questions
  2. Significance of Project
    1. Potential for leading to further research or development of methodology or theory
    2. Potential contribution to nursing knowledge/knowledge in other field
  3. Literature Review
    1. Attention to relevant and current literature
    2. Supports relationships among variables
    3. APA format preferred, other formats accepted, consistency a must
  4. Design and Methods
    1. Selects design appropriate to purpose
    2. Selects appropriate setting
    3. Chooses adequate sample and sampling procedures
    4. Describes method of data collection
    5. Acknowledges study limitations
  5. Data Analysis
    1. Adequately described
    2. Appropriate to specific aims and hypotheses or research questions

  7. Writing Style
    1. Organization & Clarity
    2. Length (8-page limit, not including abstract, references or appendices)
