Education
After graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994, Dr. Acquaviva earned her master’s degree in social work from UP in 1995. She also holds a Ph.D. in Education (2000) from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, where she conducted a six-month ethnographic research study at an urban homeless shelter for women.
Professional & Research Interests
Not only is Dr. Acquaviva a co-investigator for the National Emergency Medical Services Preparedness Initiative (a $4.7 million Department of Homeland Security-funded training and policy initiative), but she also serves as the project manager for the $2 million National Nurse Emergency Preparedness Initiative (NNEPI), a federally funded Web-based training initiative designed to increase nurses’ awareness of strategies on preparing for, responding to, and recovering from chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive events. In addition to her national workshops on end-of-life care issues, Dr. Acquaviva serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services and is co-chair of the American Society on Aging’s Leadership Council for the Lesbian and Gay Aging Issues Network. As an assistant research professor in the Department of Nursing Education, Dr. Acquaviva teaches the Business of Dying in the End-of-Life Care Program, teaches and coordinates core courses in research methods, and serves as a psychosocial faculty member for the Practice of Medicine in The George Washington University Medical School.
