Admissions

International Student Admissions

Note: Due to new U.S. federal government regulations, all international applicants to on-campus programs should plan to apply at least six months in advance of the posted application deadlines. Applicants to distance learning programs except for the B.S.H.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science do not need to apply ahead. Applicants to the B.S.H.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science need to contact the Admissions Office prior to submitting the application paperwork.

In addition to the required application materials described in the admissions process section, international applicants must submit the following documents:

  1. Visas
International applicants who require a I-20 for F immigration status (student) OR an IAP-66 for J immigration status (exchange visitor) must answer "YES" to question #14 on the application form. GW will send the appropriate form upon admission.
  2. Financial Certification
International applicants requiring an I-20 or IAP-66 from GW must submit a financial certificate verifying funding sources. Please contact the Office of Admissions to request the form. Funds must be certified in U.S. currency and should not be based on any type of U.S. employment while attending the university. If you have a disability and will require attendant care, you must certify the availability of additional funds to pay for this service. Information on financial aid for international students can be obtained from the cultural affairs officer of the United States Information Service office nearest you, or by contacting: Institute of International Education, telephone: (212) 883-8200.
  3. Transcripts
International applicants must submit a Detailed Marks Certificate or a comparable document showing course work and grades. If the document is in a language other than English, a certified English translation must be provided. If the institution at which the courses were taken issues only one official copy of this certificate, a copy of the certificate may be submitted. Both the certificate and translation must be certified by an official government agency or authorized official (a notary public is acceptable if the applicant is in the United States).

English Language Requirements

Applicants who are from countries in which English is not an official language, and who do not hold a degree from either an accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or an institution in which English is the language of instruction, will be required to take the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) placement test at The George Washington University before registering for classes. EFL course work is required for those who need it. Depending on the test results, you may be restricted in the number of courses that can be taken in addition to the EFL courses. Students assigned EFL courses should anticipate related tuition expenses, as well as a possible extended period of time to complete their studies
