Welcome to the GW Division of Cancer Survivorship
Survivorship, or the period of time following diagnosis, can be scary, overwhelming, and isolating. The George Washington University Cancer Institute's (GWCI) Division of Cancer Survivorship works to ease this burden and ensure that survivors are not alone in this fight.
The mission of the GWCI Division of Cancer Survivorship is to:
- Coordinate an integrated system of comprehensive follow-up care in a clinical research setting;
- Advocate for health policies to improve survivor access to care and quality of life;
- Empower survivors to live well.
The Division of Cancer Survivorship includes the GW Cancer Survivorship Center, the Center for the Advancement of Cancer Survivorship, Navigation and Policy (caSNP), and the National Cancer Survivorship Resource Center.
The GW Cancer Survivorship Center
The GW Cancer Survivorship Center provides long-term, multi-disciplinary clinical care for cancer survivors, an array of cancer support groups, individual patient navigation assistance, educational workshops for survivors, and creative pottery classes.
At GW, survivorship care is integrated into the overall plan of patient care. The GW Cancer Survivorship Center complements the care you receive from your oncologist and supports you in active treatment and beyond. The Center is a collaboration of the GW Cancer Institute, the GW Medical Faculty Associates and the GW Hospital.
The GW Cancer Survivorship Task Force oversees the initiatives of the Center. The mission of the Task Force is to provide comprehensive, coordinated, culturally-competent, multi-disciplinary, patient-centered care from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. The Center empowers patients and families to cope with cancer, share decision-making, utilize appropriate resources and thrive in survivorship.

The Center for the Advancement of Cancer Survivorship, Navigation and Policy (caSNP)
In 2009, the George Washington University Cancer Institute (GWCI) partnered with the Department of Health Policy in the School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) to create the Center for the Advancement of Cancer Survivorship, Navigation and Policy (caSNP). The center is committed to advancing patient navigation and cancer survivorship efforts locally and nationally through training, research, policy analysis, outreach and education.
Initiatives of caSNP include:
- Patient Navigation: From Outreach to Survivorship: This three-day training provides participants with the skills
and knowledge needed to launch or enhance their navigation program. caSNP promotes integrative, longitudinal navigation throughout the cancer continuum and
has developed this training to provide new and experienced navigators with the information and tools necessary to adapt this integrative approach to their work
with cancer patients and survivors. To learn more about this program, click here.
- Executive Training on Navigation and Survivorship: Finding Your Patient Focus: This two-day program
equips decision-makers at resource-strapped organizations with the tools and resources needed to launch and sustain navigation and survivorship programs,
two cornerstones of patient-centered care. Participants learn strategic planning techniques for developing, implementing, evaluating, and sustaining patient
navigation and survivorship programs. The training combines distance-learning and traditional classroom instruction to maximize participants' time. To
learn more about this program, click here.
- National Health Reform Comparative Analysis Project: caSNP performs analysis of national health reform legislation
and implications for cancer prevention, detection, treatment, navigation and survivorship. These analyses were designed to help policy makers, advocacy
organizations, health professionals and the public understand what national health reform means to cancer patients, caregivers and health care providers. To

The National Cancer Survivorship Resource Center
Since 2010 GWCI has collaborated with the American Cancer Society, with support from the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to develop the National Cancer Survivorship Resource Center (The Survivorship Center). Its mission is to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors and caregivers and reduce death and disability due to cancer by focusing on the importance of improving functioning and helping survivors achieve optimal health and well-being. The Survivorship Center achieves its mission by providing evidence-based information, resources and support to cancer survivors, caregivers, friends and family; improving the survivorship knowledge and skills of health care professionals, community-based and government organizations; and recommending action to policy- and decision-makers. Learn more about The Survivorship Center and its progress from www.cancer.org/survivorshipcenter
The Survivorship Center Trainings and Resources:
Addressing Cancer Survivors' Needs After Treatment: An Introduction
Originally produced for the American Cancer Society Patient Navigators, a 45-minute, pre-recorded training webinar offers information on the top issues cancer survivors face after completing treatment and a discussion of resources navigators can utilize to assist survivors transitioning from active treatment.
The Addressing Cancer Survivors' Needs After Treatment: An Introduction webinar is free to access.
 | Resources Compendium for Patient Navigators Assisting Cancer Survivors After Treatment Accompanying the webinar content is a 18-page, user-friendly document that provides easy reference to national organizations and resources on late and long-term effects, financial issues, fear of recurrence, nutrition, physical activity and care planning, with specific inclusion of resources for children, adolescents, young adults and adult survivors. The Resources Compendium is available for free download. |
