About Healing with Basketball
Healing with Basketball offers ongoing, monthly Saturday afternoon clinics for recovering breast cancer survivors in the Washington, DC metropolitan area who want to do strength and endurance training to get stronger and recover from their surgery or treatment.
As part of this training, we are all learning to play basketball!
It doesn't matter if you have never held a basketball in your life. Basketball is a wonderful upper body, team-oriented and FUN workout for breast-cancer survivors. In our clinics, we learn basketball drills (passing, shooting, etc.) and other strength-building exercises (defense, offense, aerobics.). We learn together, laugh together, and over time, we create a loving team of stronger, determined survivors.
GWCI is piloting the Healing with Basketball program for 6 months. Upon completion of the program we will share the results of the training with organizations interested in sponsoring a satellite program in their city.
To register and get more information, please use our form on the left side of this page. You must have permission from your doctor to participate prior to registration.
Our Certified Personal Trainer
Andrew Weiss is a young athlete and martial artist who teaches basketball and soccer to area school children and works as a personal trainer for adults. He is a natural, caring personal trainer and expert in helping amateur athletes (like us!) learn to play and enjoy the fun game of basketball.
Our Volunteer Program Manager
Healing with Basketball is the idea of Lynn Grodzki, psychotherapist and master certified business coach, who developed breast cancer in 2006 and had a bi-lateral mastectomy to become cancer free. She has trained with Andrew for the past 3 years to adapt his "basketball boot camp" strength and endurance program for survivors.
Together, using Andrew's methodical and motivated approach geared for breast cancer survivors, Lynn has built her upper body after surgery, developed confidence in her physical ability, and reconnected with her innate physicality. Lynn loves the results, and has never felt better or more alive in her 58 years.
