NCI Awards $3.1 Million Grant to GW Cancer Institute Project
The National Cancer Institute has approved $3.1 million in funding for a program developed by the GW Cancer Institute that will create a DC City-Wide Patient Navigator research program. Read more.

The Washington, DC chapter of Gildas Room held their 3rd Annual Gildas Scarlet Ball at the Four Seasons. The GW Cancer Institute was represented by executive director Dr. Steve Patierno and his wife Kim at the event, which also saw GWs Dr. Jeffrey Lin (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology) honored for his outstanding care of ovarian cancer patients.
Event Date: 09/09/2005 Distinguished Lecture by FDA Commissioner Crawfor
FDA Commissioner Dr. Lester Crawford presented the first-in-series Cancer Health Policy, Delivery Systems and Regulatory Affairs Distinguished Lecture, co-sponsored by the GW Cancer Institute and Friends of Cancer Research. Dr. Crawfords lecture was followed by a small reception, which was donated by GlaxoSmithKline. The series, which is in conjunction with the Department of Medicine and Medical Grand Rounds, is held during selected Thursdays during the year in the GW Hospital Auditorium.

Event Date: 06/30/2005 DC Relay for Life
The dusk-to-dawn Washington, DC Relay For Life was held at the Archbishop Carroll High School to raise awareness and funds for cancer. The GW Cancer Institute co-sponsored the event and also sent a relay team that included GW students Brad Brooks, Emily Potter, Tura Camilli, Gina Chun and Chris Richards. Other features of the event were the Survivor Lap, which celebrated those that have fought and won their battle against cancer, and the Luminaria Ceremony, which honored those who have been lost to cancer.

The National Conference on Cancer 2005: "Exploring New Pathways: Sharing the Journey" was held at Washington, DC's Omni Shoreham. The conference, which aimed to educate and raise awareness about prostate cancer and men's health in general, was attended by support groups, caregivers, partners, clinical care providers and experts in the field, including GWCI's education and outreach coordinator, Francisco Semiao.
Event Dates: 06/16/2005 - 06/19/2005 The Men's Health Network's 8th Annual Health Screenings
As part of this year's Men's Health Week, the Men's Health Network, a GWCI community partner, conducted their 8th Annual Health Screenings. Held in Capitol Hill, the three-day event saw 700 individuals get screened by volunteer health professionals, including GW urology residents Drs. Neil Kansal, Carter Le, Kambiz Tajkarimi and Joh Makari.

The GW Cancer Institute co-sponsored The Wellness Community's ovarian cancer workshop "Frankly Speaking about Ovarian Cancer: The Patient Active Guide to Living with Ovarian Cancer". The workshop featured GW's Dr. Jeffrey Lin (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology), who led the session's discussions about quality of life issues and about a proactive approach to fighting the disease. This event, held at the GW Hospital Auditorium, was free and open to the public.

Dr. Michael Han (Department of Urology) participated as a panelist for the W*USA 9 Prostate Cancer Phone Bank; the event provided viewers a chance to call in and ask medical professions questions about prostate cancer. The phone bank and a feature on prostate cancer by Channel 9 reporter Jennifer Ryan that aired on June 15th were part of Channel 9s prostate cancer awareness promotion during Mens Health Week in June.

GWUMC Walk Team members Helene Brown, Glenda Hall and Vicky Harris presented Dr. Steve Patierno and the GW Cancer Institute a check for $2,300 from the team's year-round fundraising efforts to increase breast cancer awareness. Walk Team members are regular participants in several annual cancer fundraising walks, in particular the Avon Breast Cancer Walk.

The GW Cancer Institute sponsored The Wellness Community's gala: "Building a Home for the Wellness Community Greater Washington, DC", and was represented at the fundraising event by executive director Dr. Steve Patierno and his wife Kim. The Wellness Community, a community partner of GWCI, is a non-profit organization that provides free emotional support, education and hope to people affected by cancer in Washington, DC.
Event Date: 05/16/2005 Siegel Appointed as Chair of ASCO's Clinical Oncology Career Development Committee
Dr. Robert Siegel, GWCI Associate Director for Clinical Oncology and director of the Hematology/Oncology division within the GW MFA's Department of Medicine, has been appointed as chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Career Development Committee, effective May 13. It is a committee devoted to the education and career support for fellows and young attending physicians.
Event Date: 05/13/2005 A Special Molecular Oncology Lecture on Lung Cancer
The GW Cancer Institute and the Department of Medicine and Medical Grand Rounds co-sponsored a Special Molecular Oncology Lecture on lung cancer. The Lecture, presented by Dr. Phillip A. Dennis of the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Research, was entitled "Akt, a novel target for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer" and was held at the GW Hospital's Auditorium.

The GWCI hosted the DC Cancer Coalition's Outreach Committee in strategizing implementation of the newly created cancer plan for the metropolitan DC area. Dr. Don Henson, Coalition co-chair and co-chair of GWCI's Office of Prevention and Control, and Francisco Semiao attended the meeting on behalf of GWCI.
Event Date: 04/28/2005 A Visit by Panamanian First Lady Vivian Fernandez de Torrijos
The GWCI and senior members of GWU Medical Center's administration welcomed Vivian Fernandez de Torrijos, the First Lady of Panama, and her entourage, who visited GWUMC to tour the facilities and to sign a Letter of Intent between the University and the First Lady's office. The GW Cancer Institute will guide the Republic of Panama, in their objective of establishing the country's Instituto Oncologico Nacional as a regional center for the study and treatment of cancer patients, not only of the Republic of Panama but also of the Central American Region and the Caribbeans.

The GWCI hosted a visit by Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas, Senate Chair of DC Appropriations) and members of his staff, who received a briefing on cancer and issues concerning cancer disparities in the metropolitan DC area. The senator and his staff were given a tour of GWCI, as well as the Medical Faculty Associates' Cancer Center, where he met with cancer patients receiving care from GWCI-affiliated physicians.
Event Date: 04/21/2005 American Association for Cancer Research's 96th Annual Meeting
Nearly 20 faculty researchers and students represented the GW Cancer Institute at the American Association for Cancer Researchs 96th Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA. More than 15,000 participants from 60 countries gathered to discuss over 6,000 abstracts and to hear more than 250 invited presentations on new and significant discoveries in basic, clinical, and translational cancer research.
Event Dates: 04/18/2005-04/19/2005 A GWCI-Hosted 7th Grade Science Field Trip
The GWCI hosted a group of 7th grade students from Our Savior Lutheran School in northern Virginia on a science field trip to the GWU Medical Center. The field trip, an annual tradition for GWCI Executive Director Dr. Patierno, focuses on activities in science research in general, and cancer research in particular. In addition to visiting several sites in the medical center, the students spent some time in Dr. Patierno's lab to experience a small portion of a day in the lives of cancer scientists.
Event Date: 04/13/2005 2nd Annual GW Cancer Gala
The 2nd Annual GW Cancer Gala, with Steve and Cokie Roberts as honorary co-chairs, was held at the Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC. The cancer-related works of Dr. Harold P. Freeman, Dr. Elmer E. Huerta, Carolyn "Bo" Aldige, and Michael Milken, were recognized at the event. They are the 2005 recipients of the Distinguished Public Service Award, the Cancer Compassion Award, the Cancer Advocacy Achievement Award, and the Celebration of Life Award, respectively.
Event Date: 04/08/2005 MacArthur Beverages Cancer Fundraising Events
MacArthur Beverages held their 20th Annual Vintners Dinner (April 8th) and California Barrel Tasting (April 9th) at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, DC. This fundraising event annually raises over $25,000 for the Addy and Bruce Bassin Memorial Cancer Research Fund, which supports GWCI's research on cancer prevention and control. The Institute was represented by Mrs. Kim Patierno at the California Barrel Tasting.
Event Dates: 04/08/2005-04/09/2005 "Day in Capital Hill": A Special Forum Addressing the Value of Cancer Centers
The GWCI participated in the Association of American Cancer Institutes- and Friends of Cancer Research-sponsored special Day on Capitol Hill. Dr. Patierno and other cancer center leaders addressed congressional members and staff at a special forum on the medical, scientific and economic value of these cancer centers. At this event, AACI urged Congress to increase funding for the NIH in general, as well as funding for the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Rachel Brems paper in the March 2005 issue of American Journal of Roentgenology was cited by a Reuters article featured in the Health section of abcnews.com, Computer Helps Detect Small Breast Cancers. Dr. Brem and her colleagues paper discussed how a computer-aided detection system can help radiologists spot small breast tumors that may otherwise be missed.
Event Date: 04/01/2005 Research!America's Annual Meeting and National Forum
Dr. Steven Patierno represented the GWCI at Research Americas Annual Meeting and National Forum, Research: The Risks, the Rewards, and the Returns. The event, which attracted industry leaders, heads of federal agencies, patient advocates and other stakeholders in research, was held in Washington, DC at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition, Dr. Patierno served as an honorary chair of the organizations 2005 Advocacy Awards Gala, also on March 15, at the Willard InterContinental Hotel.

The GWCI was represented by Dr. Steven Patierno and his wife Kim at the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation's 2005 annual Spring Gala held at the National Building Museum, Washington, DC. A gift to the GWCI from the benefit's proceeds, totaling $1.2 M, will support the George Washington Universitys Mobile Mammography Program, which provides breast cancer screening for medically underserved women.

The GWCI, with GWs Office of Governmental Relations, hosted a luncheon for the chiefs of staff of all DC council members. The Chiefs of Staff were briefed about the GWCI and on issues concerning cancer disparities in the city.

GWCI Executive Director Dr. Steven Patierno met with Congressman Tom Davis of Virginia in Capitol Hill. Dr. Patierno provided the congressman with a briefing on issues concerning cancer disparities that exist in metropolitan DC, as well as GWCIs work to alleviate these challenges.

The GWCI was featured in a television interview with Comcast in which Dr. Patierno discussed the state of cancer in metropolitan DC, the work being done by the GW Cancer Institute, and the Institute's 2nd annual cancer benefit gala. The interview was repeatedly broadcasted via various local Comcast stations during the lead-up to the Gala.
