GW Medical Center Delegation Tours Teaching Hospitals In Mainland China

GW Medical Center was represented by a delegation of faculty and administrators who visited several hospitals in mainland China. The group traveled at the invitation of the China Healthcare Group, Ltd. (CHG), a private healthcare management company with whom GW Medical Center recently signed a memorandum of understanding.

The purposes of the visit were to become familiar with CHG's facilities and management and to determine areas of productive collaboration.

The delegation visited CHG's Hong Kong headquarters, Mainland offices, and facilities in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Suzhou. These hospitals have wide-ranging areas of emphasis including endoscopy, hematology, infant care, in-vitro fertilization, medical imaging, nephrology, and organ transplantation. The hospitals' combined staffs exceed 6,000, treating more than 3.5 million patients per year; together they serve more than 40% of China's population. All CHG facilities are affiliated with medical universities and participate in international exchanges. In addition, these facilities house many research and development institutes, some of which are highly regarded in the United States, and telemedicine centers that afford high-quality care to people in remote areas of China.

The collaborative possibilities discussed center on clinical training for physicians, staff, and students; management training; faculty, staff, and student exchanges; hospital consultancy; research and development; and seminars and conferences. Information technology plays a role in all programs as GW Medical Center opens telemedicine connections with these facilities.

The GW delegation included Huda M. Ayas, executive director, International Medicine Programs; Gerald H. Bass, associate vice president for health economics; Frederick R. Rickles, MD, associate vice president for health research, compliance, and technology transfer; Michael G. Seneff, MD, clinical coordinator, International Medicine Programs; Samuel Stern, legal counsel to China Healthcare Group; and John F. Williams, MD, EdD, vice president for health affairs, dean, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Bloedorn Professor of Administrative Medicine. Among the sites visited: Shenzhen Central Hospital; First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sun University of Medical Sciences (Guangzhou); Shanghai Second Medical University -Renji Hospital; and First Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou Medical University.
