Faculty Briefs
Below
is a sampling of recent cases where members of the GW Medical
Center community are making a difference abroad.
Spain
Tsung O. Cheng, MD, professor of medicine, was an invited guest
of the Spanish Society of Cardiology recently in Granada, Spain.
He met with leaders of national cardiologic societies from various
European countries. He then conducted visiting professorships
at the University of Madrid, University of Cordoba, and University
of Las Palmas. His lectures on cardiology in modern China, sudden
death in the young, and abuse of acronyms in cardiologic trials
received professional acclaim and were the subject of a number
of Spanish newspaper accounts.
Canada
Tee L. Guidotti, MD, MPH, professor of environmental and occupational
health, was named co-chair for human health for the scientific
advisory panel of a major study on air pollution and health. "The
Western Canada Study on Animal and Human Health Effects Associated
with Exposure to Flare Emissions" is expected to take four
years, will cost approximately $20 million and involves the four
western Canadian provinces. Its objective is to identify health
effects that may be related to airborne combustion products produced
by the oil and gas industry and the mechanisms by which they may
occur. This is a highly controversial issue in the region, particularly
where the gas industry operates near towns, ranches, and farms.
The other co-chair is Dr. Ole Nielsen, former dean of the Ontario
Veterinary College at the University of Guelph. Members of the
panel include toxicologists, wildlife biologists, epidemiologists,
exposure assessment experts, and veterinary epidemiologists from
Canada and the United States.
Scotland
George William (Jerry) Sherk presented a paper on dispute resolution
and chaired a panel on the same topic at an annual conference
of the Water Law and Policy Programme at the University of Dundee
in Scotland. Mr. Sherk, an affiliate of the Center for Risk Science
and Public Health, is a doctoral candidate in environmental management
(SEAS) and environmental health (SPHHS). He is also an associate
of the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy
at the University of Dundee.
