The George Washington University Medical Center's Exercise Science Department is dedicated to serving the fitness, health, and wellness needs of the Foggy Bottom community in which we work, teach, and live. That's why we created WellFit (Wellness & Fitness), a healthy lifestyle and physical activity program for adults of all fitness abilities, who come from the university and surrounding DC area.

WellFit offers professional services designed to enhance well-being through exercise, nutrition, behavior modification, stress management, and health education. The program is specialized for areas of concern to our members, including heart health, perimenopause, and weight management. Our facility also has the capability to conduct research on exercise and adult health issues, to further our understanding of the population's needs and contribute to the growing body of evidence in the field.

What Makes Us Different

  • We don't claim to be a health center for everyone and certainly not for the supremely fit. That's probably what sets us apart. Simply put, we're for the regular gal or guy who just wants to feel good.
  • Our program, which uses an interdisciplinary approach to health and wellness, offers personalized, expert fitness coaching in a non-competitive yet educational, safe, and FUN environment. Health seminars, nutrition counseling, and other services are also part of the WellFit program.
  • We often serve as an adjunct to clinical health care. We work closely with members' physicians who refer patients to us, to ensure that our recommendations and guidance complement your doctor's vision of care.
  • Our own vision extends beyond these walls. We know that if you are active, comfortable with your body, and confident about your health, your enthusiasm is bound to rub off on your spouse, sister, brother, kids, parents, neighbor, co-workers, etc. In this manner, our WellFit members are uniquely positioned to spread the "wealth of health."

Above all, we're about you. Whatever your fitness and wellness goals, that's what's important to us and that's where we start. Everything else will fall into place. We hope WellFit will inspire your enjoyment of activity and appreciation for health, too - an experience that will lead to a lifelong commitment to active living.
