The Department of Exercise Science's faculty members are immersed in teaching, research, administration, and other leadership activities. Here's a brief look at the full-time faculty's involvements inside and outside the classroom.

Dr. Jerome Danoff teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Exercise Science Department. In Fall 2003, he introduced the Biostatistics graduate course, formerly taught by faculty in the School of Public Health's Biostatistics department.

Dr. Danoff also spends one day a week in the Dept. of Rehabilitation Medicine at the NIH working on various projects with medical and therapy staff. These include motor responses of HIV+ children, stroke recovery performance for adults, cardiac and conditioning factors in obese adolescents, and measures of fatigue.

Ms. Alex Dickman, M.S., made the transition from Department Administrator to full-time Instructor in Fall semester 2003. In addition to teaching undergraduate courses, she is also part of a group that is studying the feasibility of a new community-based exercise program similar. Professor Dickman coordinates the Department's 99 Activity classes and instructors, and serves as faculty advisor for the recently re-established undergraduate majors club.

Professor Dickman also owns Antient Press, an award-winning genealogy publishing company that publishes transcriptions of Virginia County Courts records. Antient Press has published 535 books to date.

Dr. Larry Hamm teaches courses in and directs the Clinical Exercise Physiology concentration of the graduate program. He also teaches the undergraduate Exercise Physiology course and directs the department's exercise physiology lab.

Dr. Hamm is the principal investigator on two studies involving exercise and spinal cord injury at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC. He serves as treasurer for the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and is editing an upcoming resource manual for the association. He was also a section editor for the American College of Sports Medicine's 5 th edition resource manual. Dr. Hamm gave three presentations and helped administer the ACSM Exercise Specialist certification exam in South Korea in 2003.

Dr. Wayne Miller is the Exercise Science Department's Graduate Program Coordinator. He teaches graduate courses and directs the Exercise, Nutrition & Eating Behaviors concentration.

Dr. Miller recently completed an 18-month study of a healthy lifestyle intervention's effects related to disease risk factors and obesity in South African women. He is currently in the beginning stages of work on two studies examining cognitive function and obesity with GWU's Psychology Department. Dr. Miller is treasurer of the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition & Physical Activity and edits the Healthy Weight Journal.

Photo of Dr. PaupDr. Donald Paup is the interim chair of the Exercise Science Department, a position he has held since 1990. Dr. Paup has overseen the Department through multiple changes, in both name and in the GW school that houses the Department. In addition to his administrative role, he teaches undergraduate major classes and sits on graduate student research project committees.

In 2003, Dr. Paup marked his 30th year of involvement with exercise science at GWU. He came to the university in 1973 to direct the exercise rehabilitation of the GWU Collaborating Center of the National Exercise and Heart Disease Project, and as adjunct associate professor. He has coached over a dozen GWU All-American badminton players and has made GWU famous for its annual badminton camp.

Dr. Ellen Schulken teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the department. In Spring 2004 she introduced the graduate Epidemiology for Exercise Science course, formerly taught by Epidemiology & Biostatistics faculty in the School of Public Health & Health Services.

In addition to teaching, she is currently working on reorganizing and restructuring the undergraduate internship program. During the 2002-2003 academic year, Dr. Schulken developed and implemented the undergraduate Health & Fitness concentration within the Exercise Science major program of study.

Dr. Patricia Sullivan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, and also serves as department interim vice-chair. She oversees several graduate student research projects each year. She has collaborated with Professors Westerman, Washington-Lofgren, and Nashman on a number of projects primarily associated with athletic training education programs.

Dr. Sullivan serves as Associate Director of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance at the ERIC Clearinghouse on Teaching and Teacher Education. She also recently served a term as President of the National Council for the Accreditation of Coaching Education.

Ms. Leah Washington-Lofgren, M.S., ATC, teaches courses in the Athletic Training Education Program and oversees junior and senior students' athletic training practicums. In June 2004, the International Sport Journal will publish her first article “The role of athletic training in post-injury psychological recovery of collegiate athletes.”

Professor Washington-Lofgren serves on the Committee for Undergraduate Writing & Disciplines and the Academic Integrity Council at GWU, and is the public relations representative for the District of Columbia Athletic Trainers' Association.

Dr. Beverly Westerman directs and teaches courses in the department's Athletic Training Education Program. Along with Professor Washington-Lofgren, Dr. Westerman is conducting a re-accreditation self-study of the athletic training program in order to maintain the GW Athletic Training Education Program's national accreditation.

Dr. Westerman was selected as host committee chair for the upcoming National Athletic Training Association convention in Baltimore , Md. , in June 2004. She is also active in the professional association's education council and coordinates the approved clinical instructor educator program.
